Hugh, The hole was about 3ft across and 2ft deep, the extraordinary thing was the steel pipe that the gun powder was packed in completely disappeared. The gunpowder was the real McCoy!!! Fifty years ago, people in the fens still had the stuff lying around in their sheds.
JIM, I always got told off by Father for putting my brother in danger, when in truth, it was the other way round. When you are 9 years old, you have no concept of mortality and injuries are easily brushed off at that age!!

We used to use a 5 gallon oil container, wedge a hosepipe into it using some cloth wrapped around the hosepipe, turn on the water and retire, BANG! Mate of Mine (A Farmer) got expelled from Lindasfarn College for blowing the (Empty) Swimming pool up, Cracked a number of tiles.
