I guess even the best trained and tested pilots can get it wrong, if indeed that is what's happened.:(

many years ago, a friend of mine was carrying out Air Warfare Training (dogfighting) in Hunters over the North Sea.

Both he and his "opponent" misread their altimeters in the heat of the action. 16,000ft was in fact 6,000ft.

6,000ft disappears very rapidly in a fast jet, his "opponent" (and colleague) didn't return that day.

At what point as a trained pilot do you not eject?
Interesting dilemma. Some just think they can recover it and run out of talent, some are hellbent in staying to save the day due to a previous poorly calculated manoeuvre. Others though knowingly take one for the team to avoid further disaster. One such pilot was a Tornado pilot in the early 80's, his crippled kite was falling out of the sky and heading for a school, he told the rear to bang out, which he did and lived but the Jocky bravely stayed with it until the end and steered the crippled kite away from the school with no injuries to others. Oh, apparently his wife was in the Tower on duty listening all the way. Bugger :(

I have a story about how a Boeing board member described the then new 747 and its undercarriage when queried about its strength.

In southern drawl he was heard to say "don't worry, we design them to be A&N proof"

It would be politically incorrect for me to explain this comment, but maybe the Saudi loss demonstrates the Eurofighter isn't!
