Is this worth saving?

If someone is buying it to run then the car seems attravtive even with the mileage.
You can pick a 2.8 lump up for the right money if it turned into a lemon and it would still not be that bad in my opinion.

Ask @Synclare. Sooner or later cars come to the end of the road. Someone like Sean could make it viable as a keeper but not to make any money on as a seller.;)

I'm sure a breaker will see value in it mate, for the good of us Z3 owners of course ;) and I have to admit that unless you are in my game, its not a viable project.
 
@Sean d if it doesn't sell then bid him £500 now it's listed as a cat c. Getting an engine with lower mileage won't be hard to get and like you say your the right man to sort it. Drop an engine in it, swap your interior and bits over, repair the bent front and flog it for £1200 ish. You've got the car you want looking the way you want it and some money back in the bank. Viable option? o_O

But this is the problem. A decent engine could be £500 unless it's coming out of your own breaker. £200 for panels (if you're lucky) and you've reached the £1,200. That's before any consideration of your time for swapping the engine and doing the repair.

It would be worth more than £1,200 finished but then you're not going to get it for £500 either. I would think more realistically £900 purchase plus £700 engine and panels and there might be £400 profit in it. What a lot of work for £400 though.

The best thing you could do with this is as you say, knock him down a bit, have the right colour panels to do a straight swap and sell it on quick for £1,500. There might be £400 in that too and it's a lot less hassle if you're absolutely set on doing your bit for Z'kind.

But it's not really worth it is it?! There are better projects around.
 
been looking for a winter project so I emailed the guy seems only the bonnet and slam is damaged oh and one light fixing but that is repairable apparently, but the mileage did put me off a bit to be honest, its not just value issues its getting someone to buy it after repairs with 160k on the clock

Trouble is the guy doesn't want to drop the price. At least not yet.

To be honest mate, I was driving mine today, sun was shining, great music on the MP3, and a massive smile on my face and the thought occurred to me that I love driving this car and do I really need a bigger engine, so I think I will be keeping things just as they are for now :D

It's a very easy fix (unless there's something we can't see but I doubt it) so be assured of that.

But we should all look after our cars as financial assets unless we are absolutely loaded or really are going to keep a car forever. Money has to be spent wisely and if we invest sensibly then there will be more for another project and we can ultimately save more Zeds.

So you can't ignore resale viability and it isn't great in this instance unless it's a give away price.

And if it ever needs expensive repairs then it's a tougher decision if it's worth half or less of a much better one.

But if you've promised you should bring a write-off back from the brink (again on the face of it) you won't find many simpler than this one.

So I'm not saying to anyone don't do it. Just do all your sums up front and be aware there are more financially viable projects out there.

It's actually a fair price even as a breaker as it can be driven home and avoid £200+ transport costs. So I wouldn't expect him to move more than £100, may be less or not at all.

For anyone wondering if they've missed a bargain, take a look at this:

A 1997 2.8 repaired Cat C with 105k miles. It's £1,995 and is unsold after being listed 2 weeks ago. It's black with a black interior which for me personally makes it more desirable than the Atlanta Blue with tan interior which is the subject of the thread. And it looks a nice car to me.

So it supports a £1,500 valuation for the 160k miles car after repair and the lack of financial viability.

Just trying to encourage people to do the sums and look after their pennies :)
