i had a swine of a time bleeding mine, had to swap the heater hoses round to get rid of the air in the matrix, scared to swap them back now

That's the water valve. It could be something to do with your problem, as it is operated by the heater knob (as I described earlier). It opens when the heater knob is set above FULLY COLD. It's purpose is to ensure that hot water is passed through the matrix when required, and that the matrix is allowed to cool when set to FULLY COLD.While cleaning out bits out of the engine bay on mine today I found what looks to be the additional heater pump.
