One for the serious techies here I think.

Taking an instrument cluster coding plug from a m44 1.9 pre-facelift and putting it into a 2.8 99 facelift......
Will it work as is ? Or need some coding correction ?
I can see the part numbers on the two plugs in question are identical.
I've swapped like for like on the model year before and it's not an issue.
Reason for swap is eep1 fault on the 2.8 clocks caused by the coding plug.

The only thing I can tell you is that the recorded mileage on the replacement coding plug will overwrite the figure on your cluster and to regain the correct figure is possible but difficult. As for CPs off different models, I have no idea, sorry.

will this result in the tamper dot being displayed?
I've done this with a matching year plug and both six cylinder vehicles, to determine if the coding plug was the cause of the eep1 fault. It does remove the fault and the gauges all work again, but yes, it illuminates the tamper dot. As stated above, it also increases the mileage on the clocks to correspond to the new plug. I'm not so worried about either of those issues currently as It's just a very cheap project car to play with at this stage, to learn on. It could still end up a breaker, or if lucks on my side it may return to the road. 🙂

Tamper dot on mine too, but as I have all the MoTs since 2009 I can support the mileage as genuine.

I'll just give it go for the sake of a cheap set of clocks ( pre-facelift clocks coming in the post for £15 )

Keep us informed please, others have this same problem from time to time.

I will do. Still waiting for the used clocks to arrive in the post.

I put the pre-facelift plug in today and it does work. Eep1 clears and all the gauges work as they should again. But, as already stated above, the milage is altered to that on the new plug if it's higher than your clocks milage and the tamper dot also illuminates.

If you could post some pictures it would make clearer what you’re talking about re the “tamper dot” for those who don’t know.

Tony.

So just to recap, this is a coding plug from a 4 cylinder 1.9 pre-facelift, put into a face lift 6 cylinder 2.8.... (to cure the eep1 fault that comes up on the clocks in place of the milage and the loss of function of the rev counter, fuel gauge and temperature gauge)

All we need now is for someone clever to chip in explain how to correct the miles and remove the tamper dot..... 😃

I paid a chap with a dedicated laptop device to do mine. He couldn't clear the tamper dot though. If you can access or have the certificates of MoTs going back several years then you can show the true mileage in broad terms. Glad it's fixed though Harvey.

Can you remember what it cost you ? I see some cars can require a chip re soldering. Hopefully not on the Z3 ?

I did this flowchart a while back on the thread below based on reading up and applying some logic. It's my understanding and not known fact so be careful if you want to use it on your car. I would be interested to know if experiences here validate or disprove it.
