Inner Sills Question

Spot on - they’re not available now but were at some point. Rather annoying but this is what we face when we have cars in their third decade.
This is part of the cycle of cars, I know as most of mine are 60 years old. At first the manufacturer makes the parts, then they dry up, then someone else sees the demand and takes over, he makes a batch and they eventually sellout so become unavailable again until someone else realises just how many cars are left and makes a new batch. Usually in the middle someone finds a close match from another car and they fit with a bit of modding. Eventually it comes down to some small-scale enthusiast or restorer somewhere making them by hand from sheet metal.

Usually at a cost far in excess of what people think is reasonable. There's a guy on PH who has just made an E-type bonnet from sheet steel. It only took him three weeks. 120 hours at £60p/h is a lot of dosh. Lucky for him his labour is free, so it only cost him £100 for the steel.

The reality is that it becomes a repair that only the very wealthy or a skilled DIYer can afford.

Got a link for that? Sounds interesting.
If my memory serves me right it's not in it's own thread, so I don't think I'll find it by searching. If it pops up again in my watched threads, I'll try to remember to post it here. He didn't show the fabrication, it's just the completed thing. I think he's basically making a lightweight from a VIN plate.

I've just looked at the titles of the last 360 days that I have posted and I can't see anything obvious. If I only viewed the thread there isn't much chance of my finding it.

Although this is worth a skim read...

Is this it? Some guy beating sheet steel to E Type bonnet. Not the whole thing but I guess there's other videos showing the other sections. Pretty neat. But I wished they wouldn't add the music.

The problem is you need to be pretty handy at cutting to make a good job of removal from a donor car.

So many sections of metal and the rear is close to the fuel tank on one side and various lines on the over side.

Time consuming, dangerous and then people want it for £20 delivered!

Yes, had thought about the fuel tank proximity.

Given the inner sills are part of the chassis, can they be replaced without compromising the integrity of the actual body of the car?

In a word, yes, they can, but they would need to be seam welded all around the repair.

Tony.
