Hello and welcome from South Devon. Spent a lot of time in North Carolina where we have family (Greensboro) and the Outter Banks is my favourite place in the world.

Rear rattles? I had one that turned out to be fuel/gas tank straps, just added some more packing between the strap and the tank.

Enjoy
Steve
OK, I'll check that out, thanks Steve. The Outer Banks is a favorite of ours also.

I think someone has mentioned that the rattle could be from the handbrake drum brake mechanism. If not, I just have!

I'm sure you'll hear other opinions very soon though.
As posted many times, If you have the OEM suitcase and boot rack the "lip" should be at the back towards the rear window as that is the way it is designed to fit the suitcase on it, otherwise you would be lifting the lid into your face.
And yes, I know, because I have both.

Agree with HT, the luggage racks are intended by the manufacturers to be fitted with the raised side next to the rear window. If luggage is securely fastened on it will not 'slide off ' the back.

It had occured to me that who else but the manufacturer would have the definitive answer to this as you state. But in actual reality this is not exactly the case. I say this because about 2 years ago, I researched every manufacturer I could find through the internet to see what each one prescribed as the proper way to install the rack. I wanted drfinitive proof to stick under @hard top's nose. Alas, to my surprise of about 10 different manufactures I could find, in displaying how to attach their racks, exactly half shower the lip on the front side and half showed the lip on the rear side. That certainly settled the discussion...................NOT. I must fall back on basic logical observation and deduction. The rack on my car is slanted towards the rear. Most of your driving and accelerating (unless you deliver pizzas (like I did for 2 years)) it in the forward direction, causing anything tied to your car to be forced backwards by the acceleration and particularly the drag caused by the wind. People have argued that an accident could cause damage or personal injury. Do most people run into other cars every time they go out for a drive? Or most of the time? Or even some of the time? Actually, most rarely get into that type of accident and some of us never have.
To be fair, I must acknowledge that there are forces pushing the luggage foward every time you brake. You say that luggage securely fastened should not slide off the rear and also securely fastened should also not slide off the front as well. But even that statement is certainly not balanced as the forces of acceleration and wind are far more diligent at working things to the rear of the slanted rack that they are in any forward motion. Unless you drive like my wife, you accelerate with generally more rapid force then you use when you brake. (My wife finally seems to "discover" the brake pedal just when she's about to hit someone.)
I would like to ask @hard top if he ever actually took the time to call BMW and ask them the reasons WHY they mount the rack with the lip forward. Perhaps their reasoning will follow along the same logic as why their reverse gear is right next to 1st gear in the shift configuration (and in the same direction) and why, if your car stalls out, you must shut the ignition completely off before you can actuate the starter again......Frankie

As stated in my above post, if you have the OEM suitcase that is the only way, I don't give a flying fig to be honest how people do it otherwise.

When I visited the website https://trunkluggagerack.com/ I saw the racks installed in either direction... but, when I see the trunk opened, the rack with the support rail toward the cockpit would support the luggage better in that position. So maybe both positions are right, depending on whose vehicle it is, and how they wanted to install it? Peace.

It's about time we let you in on something. You should know the whole story. You see, this has been going on for YEARS. It may have started before I ever was a member of the forum. I have no way of knowing. With me, it all started with the first time I learned to post a picture of my car on the forum. That's when I first got to know @hard top. When he saw the picture, he posted back that the rack was on the wrong way around. I thought to my self: "Oh my God, what have I done wrong here?" I had never been on any forum before and I didn't know about any rules or any etiquette. I thought I was probably going to get booted off the forum. Other forum members chimed in on one side or the other. I thought I'd started a war in the forum. Another member, @miller1098 sided with me by saying that I was right and did I want all my wife's underwear strewn all over the highway? I thought, well I'm into this already so let's have some fun. I replied that my wife didn't wear any underwear. Well now that started another whole round of replies and jokes on that topic. I can't tell you how many times a new member has posted a pic of his/her Zed and we (usually me or @hard top start in all over again. Like you say, 'so what?'. and you're right. It just seems that someone will always jump into the pile to start things up again. Usually happens during the winter when we're all getting cabin fever and need a diversion. I know if I start in about it, @hard top can't resist. Sometimes I actually make a bet with myself on just how long it takes him to get back at me. Perhaps one day we'll have a few drinks over it...................Frankie

The medieval argument was over how many angels could stand on the point of a pin - a much more rewarding debate.:)

Oh, I get it now! The whole thing is a debating exercise, while waiting for the better top down weather to get here. Cool.
You see, my former boss at BMWMC was a Liverpudlian, and a bit of a hooligan when he had a few pints in him, so we were always trying to calm him down to try and keep him out of unnecessary arguments, mainly to keep us from getting tossed out. He works for Rolls-Royce now, mostly back and forth to Dingolfing, Germany.
Keep that debate going... and did you ever figure out how many angels there were?

There is a lot of friendly banter on here Dean, but there are a great many very knowledgeable and helpful people who contribute to this site.
The activities at 'Zedshed' being a very good example, along with all the other useful advice.
