Looks interesting from my home City.. I remember as a kid all the large dockyard cranes.. which I think none are left. Good to see the News.. yet again has some great mistakes.. The next photo down.. Queen Lizy with a Type 45.. all the I can see under the QE is minesweepers and mine hunters.. not a Destroyer insight.. Sums up the Navy these days.. its all on paper.

@pgunter
There are only 2 of the "old" dockyard jib cranes left, and one of those will be demolished as soon as a type 45 leaves dry dock.
We only have 5 type 45 destroyers, HMS Defender, HMS Duncan, HMS Daring, HMS Diamond and HMS Dragon and currently only 1 of the 5 is operational. The other four are laid up in the dockyard undergoing various engineering jobs.
The new fleet of type 26 frigates will have Plymouth as their "home" port, leaving Pompey with the type 45's and the 2 new aircraft carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth II and HMS Prince of Wales.
Pompey will also be "home" to a number of minesweepers too.

@pgunter incidentally Paul, the ship in the dock underneath the "mega crane" is a type 45 destroyer.

Well mate, they might have some subs to care for too, if

You certainly wouldn't get me up there :nailbiting::sour:

The old 240 was the one, apparently big enough for a cinema in the cab, a lot of dockies got caught watching films in there, back in the 60s.

I seem to recall that when they erected some tower cranes at Lincoln Uni. a couple of years ago they spent what seemed like ages testing it before they started to use them, you could hear what we assumed were "overweight" alarms sounding from across at Tanvics.

Tony.
