When i turn on the ignition one click ( so all the warning lights come on) stop there and then try to switch it further to start the engine it wont turn. If I just put the key in and turn it the whole way round at once it starts no problem. Is this normal ? Or is it because the cars been stood for a while and the barrel has seized up a bit? I've put some grease on it and left it for now! Thanks for any help

Perfectly normal. It's how ignition switches are supposed to work Tracey.

Is that a BMW thing then? Every other car I've had including my current Toyota Yaris you can turn it one click, the engine lights /electrics come on, then if you want to start the car you just continue turning the key on full. On the Z3 you would have to turn it back off and then turn it the whole way? Hope I'm making sense lol

My ignition acts as per your description on both my Z3's, so there must be something wrong with your barrel.

I always have turned my ignition key to the first click, waited for a couple of seconds then fired up in all my cars, no issues, Z3 included.

First turn of key to position 1 switches on ignition and dash light display, key should then turn to position 2 to engage the starter, when engine fires release the pressure on the key and it will or should return to position 1 under spring pressure. If your key will not advance to position 2 unless you return it to the off position and then turn it straight to position 2 to start the car I would hazard a guess that the key barrel is worn and sticking. You should not use grease inside the barrel, dry Graphite powder should be the only lubricant you should use in lock barrels, it dosn't cause things to stick inside the lock just lubricates the workings.

Give it a good spray with WD40 to thin the grease down and work the lock with the key back and forwards to thin the grease, worth a try before replacing the barrel. If that works let it dry out for a few days and then get some graphite powder and give it a squirt and use the key back and forwards to work the powder into the lock.
