Sorry but this bugs me - Perfect sunny day, 100% visibility, a stream of vehicles coming towards you with DRL's / Lights on.

Let's hope leaving the EU will dump the law associated with having to have these light blights fitted.

No chance mate, Volvo's had 'em back in the 70's.;) I may also point out that not every one has "eyes like a s*** house rat!" =))=))

Tony.

ps. Would you like motor bikes to turns theirs of too?:)

But at least with the old Volvos you could specify whether you wanted them or not.
One of the most dangerous safety features on modern cars. Gives the drivers the old sense of security syndrome, never think to put lights on when foggy etc. forgetting their rear isn't lit up. Oh errr :D Taking away folks thinking, which in turn creates unawareness.

Not much chance of that either mate, most cars (especially ladies cars) have Auto lights on permanently.

Tony.

DRL's are needed over here, it has been proven that on the long flat roads drivers tend to 'look over' the oncoming traffic.

When ever there is a car travelling behind me with those over powerful LED lights I have to dip my rear view mirror.
Baffles me as to why car manufacturers make their cars with a default on mode.
O yes I do it's look at me mode.

I find that comment very hard to beleive Steve. You must have very sensitive eyes.;) So as I asked Bryan, would you have motor bikes turn their headlights off too, which are default on by design also? Because to be honest they do p*** me off, when you see it coming you have to decide how far over the speed limit its travelling at before you can pull out to overtake.

Tony.

Some of the Citroens have ridiculously bright LEDs Day runners and these have made me squint a bit during dusk time. Also Audis thats why the LEDs turn off when the indicators are turned on because they are too bright.

I agree Niall, some are too bright but should either dim or extinguish when lights are turned on. You would think an artic tractor unit would be big enough to see but people still pull out in front of them even with DRL's on.

Tony.

Just my two penneth, when I used to ride motorbikes I wouldn't dream of riding without the head light on (I had older bikes so I had to turn the light on). Even then other drivers would seemingly not see me,even with high vis gear on.
When I'm in the zed I will have the front fogs on in the day time usually, hoping to make the car more visible to others as its a low slung car.
Also when your driving on country roads with over hanging trees etc casting big dark shadows in the day time it can be hard to see other cars as your eyes adjust from bright sunshine to almost darkness,so if you have some form of lights on you are more visible to others,it is not about the "look at me " factor for me,but a safety thing.
I'll be getting some drl's at some point to save me having to use the front fogs.
On the other hand though,at night those extremely bright head lights that shine pure white or blueish play havoc with my eyes tbh and think that is what @Low Rider may have been referring to.

Steve

I would agree with you Steve when I use to teach motor cycle I would always say put your lights on as it's so easy fir car drivers to miss a motor bike.
Lights in general i find not at problem but there's something about LEDs that seam to be intense to my eyes.

A study in the USA concluded that DRL's had little effect on overall accident rates. Car to car accidents remained level. The number of accidents between LTV's (Vans) and other vehicles improved but this was offset by an increase of accidents between vehicles & pedestrians/cyclists/motorbikes.

Motorcyclists are particularly peed off as it makes them more invisible.

There is also the fact that fuel consumption is increased leading to more CO2 being put into the atmosphere.

Which reminds me, I must get those angel eyes fitted!

That's exactly why I fitted them on my Z3 Steve, although it didn't stop the guy with the ancient Triumph pulling out in front of me on one of my "Did you really have to " video's. But I think that they're a worthwhile addition so the Z4 has some too.:)

Tony.

In the USA even if they had flashing lights and sirens it wouldn't make a difference cus they are too busy gassing on there cell phones discussing what gun they're going to buy next to add to there growing unnecessary collection

Steve

Funny, but sadly could be true too.:(

Tony.

To me its about being seen, limiting the chances of the "sorry mate but I didn't see you" after some one has pulled out in front of you.
I know we can't avoid everything as there will always be the risk takers that think they are bullet proof.
Having lights on in the day doesn't give me a false sense of security either, not meaning to go against you @Eddie Zedder ;).....mate.....buddy :p.
We all have our views on things I guess :).
@t-tony if I get some drl's would you help me wire them up.....pretty please :D

Steve

No problem Steve, I'm just having a Grumpy Old Git day.=)). I know what you mean about being invisible when in the Zed though, people pull out on you, drive on your tail and want to race you, never have any of these problems in the Freelander. :(

It's good to see you on here again, you seemed absent for a while......thought you'd emigrated .
Yes I seem to get that as well Bryan,I'm driving an 18 year old car and you get folks in new sporty cars trying to goad you in to a race that clearly they will win.......so I try and have a go. Sometimes :ymdevil:=)).
