It would have been a lot less awkward for all if the driver had man-handled (or woman handled, but that has other implications!) the trailer. It is harder to reverse a short trailer and extremely difficult when the rear view is so poor from the mini-bus. I reverse my Brian James Clubman and it's easier with the car on it because it makes it more visible in the mirrors.

If I had a pound for every time I've seen some inept reversing of horse trailers while I was working in the world of horses I'd be several pounds better off. Really shouldn't be allowed to go forwards with a trailer till you've demonstrated an ability to go backwards, too. We've got quite a few narrow lanes around here and the failures I've seen....... Same applies to the tourists that come here with the enormous 4WD things that (I'm guessing) they must have hired for the holiday because they sure can't handle them.

Yep, short trailers are a nightmare to reverse.

I can only reverse a trailer using my mirrors. I had a go at reversing a very narrow trailer with a tractor once. It didn't end well. Jack-knifed within two feet.

My two other favorite trailer tales are from my days in green.

I was reversing a trailer into a hide position when the ground under the trailer gave way and the trailer was left hanging on the pintle over a large pit. I suppose I was lucky that I didn't follow it.

The second was when we were manoeuvring recovery trailers with the Fodens. The recovery trailers are on pintled axles so there are two pivot points. The regular soldiers had to unhitch, turn the truck around and push the trailer with the front towing pintle. One of the regular sergeants came back from a mission and parked his Foden nose-on to a wall with the trailer on the back. He came storming into the office, threw the keys on the table and said something like "let's see one of you stabs park that one". One of the lad's day jobs was tractor shunting, so he quietly picked up the keys. Five minutes later he came back in the office and hung the keys on the hook. Stabs 1 Arabs 0

Sorry folks, I have to completely disagree, I think that’s not bad considering.

1, the auto reverse coupling is clearly banjaxed, shortening the drawbar.

2, more critical, look closely, that kerb is very uneven, why the trailer veers to the offside. It’s >3x the height on the offside. Quite a problem for a light trailer. Two choices, take a slight run at it, . . dodgy, or, do what they did. Line the trailer up dead straight to both the kerb and the van, then slowly Sqeeeeze over the rise.

In the distant past I’ve taken a grinder to a kerb I had to repeatedly reverse over, just to eliminate the above problem.
