Again thanks for all the info regarding no anti-syphon tube in the fuel inlet pipe. I syphoned out a gallon or 2 and got the petrol level way below the fuel pump assembly circular inlet. Took the unit out and confirmed the pump motor is dead. Now looking for a replacement complete assembly or maybe just the motor/pump unit.
Anybody got one before I rush off to a breakers???

If you have a Euro Car Parts or Andrew Page depot near you they should be able to supply you with the pump/motor to replace yours. It will more than likely have a Bosch part number on it to identify it with. If so even GSF worth a try. Personally I wouldn't fit a second hand fuel pump because they're not too easy to change. But that's just me.:)

@t-tony Fixed. The hardest part was removing the trim. Someone pulled out the plug supplying power to the actuator - didn't like the hassle of the cap being locked.

While in there I noticed that there is another non-connected wire that seems to be part of the stereo amplifier mounted to the chassis near the fuel cap area. I could not see where it is to be connected. hmmm.

Could you be seeing the ground (earth?) on the filler neck?

I've now bought a "new" fuel pump off ebay and it's a high pressure Walbro plug in replacement (hopefully) for the old Z3 one removed from the tank assembly.
I believe the Walbro pump is 5bar whereas I think the Bosch one I removed is 3.5bar. I'm hoping the fuel pressure regulator will handle this pressure difference. Does anyone have any knowledge of this??

I believe Cooper is talking about the fuel cap cover locking mechanism. He mentioned his wasn't working a few posts ago iirc, ;-)
That's correct @Sailorbaz , I kind of jumped in with another issue and it may have confused some people regarding the original problem this thread is about.

Finally got round to looking at the fuel filler cap locking issue while the boot carpets were out. The afore mentioned small connector was connected to the loom at the rear of the o/s/r light unit. The green emergency release pull was present too. Next I removed the o/s/r wheel arch liner (not easy) and accessed the solenoid. I disconnected the cable from the solenoid and pulled the wiring through and unbolted the solenoid to clean and check. I reconnected the solenoid to the loom in the boot and watched the plunger as I operated the central locking, work every time. Checked the cable and found that the "pin" which locks the filler flap has been snapped off or shortened by some other means. A new cable required so pm sent to @spurs fan in a coupe. 51258410564 Having checked on the link from HT this parts is only £3.50 if still available.

Some photo's of fuel filler release cable replacement. Last one is the old cable - the locking pin at the end on the new cable is approx.. 3/4" longer. Sorry, I'm still Imperial.
