They can be removed and you can get new bulbs in there but it is very fiddly and takes a while to get it working unless your lucky first time. You take the old bulb out with pliers or by breaking them and bend back the contacts on a new bulb so that they push down into the holder. There isn't really a way to secure the contacts though to make sure they are snug and make contact correctly inside the holder, then you have to secure the bulb to the holder with glue or something similar. It can be done but it fiddly, I've done it with standard bulbs so I can't see why it can't be done with LED bulbs.

That is very helpful. Thanks. I now know what I'm looking at! I've ordered a new bulb for the blown one that sits vertically, and will see if I can pull it out with long nosed pliers through the side cheek. I would like to get away without removing the radio if possible.

I got my direct from BMW ebay Jan '23 - part number 61138353797= bulb and holder.
£11.77 each but "free postage" - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/184878852500
You will shred your hands. And probably swear. A lot.
There are options to upgrade to LED and make something but it's a lot of work and hard to get to so I stumped up the readies.

It's worth doing, I did both the 3.0 and 2.8 by just taking the head unit out. First time was a right faff but the second one took half the time once I'd figured it out. Bulbs are expensive but will probably last the car out once done.
