I keep seeing on ebay, rare bmw z3 2.8 wide body, and yet there seems to be quite a few for sale, and when I went looking for a wide bodied z3 there were plenty to look at, I wonder if and just how rare are they?

Sales pitch trying to catch out the uneducated. All 2.8's are "wide body", and all facelifts are the same width as those

Just the usual bull, if your after one though the 3.0 litre is better but commands a higher price but I sure many a 2.8 owner will tell you how pleased they are with there's. If your after a weekender car so to say there are plenty of 2.8 to be had out there so get the best you can for your budget cash is king. If I were after a daily driver though I might opt for the slightly more efficient 3.0 I prefer the wide body of the 2.8 but the economy and improved efficiency of the 3.0 needs to be considered. A bit much for me to state considering I have a ///M but the general running parts are cheaper on these models.

I do prefer the pre facelift wide body shape, tho I did look at some 3litre z3. I opted for an earlier 2.8, the rarity claim ive seen recently just struck me as nonsense when theres several on ebay alone.

so true! when I got my first z3 I did not think there were many about, how wrong was I, hence my query about rarity, long live the z3 in all its guises
All 2.8's are wide body but there are a few of the facelift 2.8's about so could be those it is referring to. These would be late 1999 or early 2000.
Someone local to us has an X plate 2.8 which is the same plate as our 3.0 and is a facelift or 'bumlift'

My Z3 2.8 auto is very rare. It is the only one I have.
