How good a driver are you??

Difficult to evaluate yourself, however, I'll have to go for a cheeky 8. Class 2 (in old money) since 85 and an on road and off road emergency response driver since 86. Left, right and centre drive. 4x4, 6x4, 6x6 up to 35 footer 30 ton fire appliances. Auto, manual, semi auto. For balance my offspring think I'm rubbish because I drive slow ........ at the speed limit, unless my Zed is out of course

I feel confident driving everything I'm familiar with and would say a five. I've always driven very defensively but with our winter conditions slow is best most times. Summer in the Zed sees the tach needle way up through a couple of gears but only up to the speed limits as I need my licence to drive my son so he doesn't lose his house or job. Retirement has it's bonuses and luckily my wife and I can help him out over the past two years. Don't drink and drive, you may not be as fortunate!! JIM

Shoot me down in flames but I would disagree .i think I'm a better driver when I'm driving briskly ,I'm more aware of everything ,I don't get distracted or complacent that's not driving at the" limit"mind you

It would depend on your definition. If by "good" you mean fast I'd put myself at about a 7. If "good" is a bit broader then I'd be a solid 8 as its kinda essential for my job. I work with a few 9's. Incidentally the best driver I work with (and the ONLY person I would ever let behind the wheel of my zed) is a 9.5 and a female so that stereotype has been blown up in my face!

That said I'm still very nervous in my zed as despite owning it since April, I've only done 1500miles (including picking it up from Wales and a trip to the south coast) so I'm not used to it yet. I drive it like im a 4! My company cars get driven like I'm a 10 though! Haha.

It depends on what I'm driving and how fast Hugh. I drive a 65ft wagon and drag for a living which is longer than your artic and often puts you to the limits of your capabilities when in tight spots etc so on that score I'd say I am an OK driver. As a car driver I'd say middle of the road (4-5) but when driving a speed I'd say that slips down a (3-4). Your not as safe at speed fact!

Took me ages to get them in position.. And I used Bailing twine around the rear safety bar to hitch them together...Worked a treat..

I know exactly what you mean Hugh, when I'm forced to drive slowly, behind a lorry or OAP my mind starts to wander and I'm more inclined to observe the scenery. When I drive at the regulated road speed I am far more focused on the road and what the car is doing.

A number of pro drivers on here so I'd expect a few 8s and maybe the odd 9.
If you consider yourself good simply for always being fast then you're probably a 3 or less. Good is taking account of the conditions, your car, weather, road and other drivers around you. Good driving is 90% observation and planning irrespective of your speed. Even that can't protect you from the unexpected (like an HGV driver falling asleep at 60mph+ behind you in slowing traffic or someone (two actually) stepping out into the road and your headlights without looking or warning - both of which I've had).

But despite being caught in a couple of major shunts I've never caused an accident or even ever caused any damage, still have a paper licence and have driven getting on for if not over a million miles (touch wood!!!)
Do I always drive slowly? Of course not - I've got a 3L, but speed limits are there for a reason so they deserve respect. Do I drive defensively? Absolutely! There's some pretty dangerous oiks out there. They don't give a stuff about you.
What does that make me? Probably still not as good as I think I am. I'd hope for a 7.

A llooonnnggg time ago when I took my first driving lesson Derek Saundby told me this piece of advice which I have used all my life, "Treat everyone else who uses the roads as an idiot" best advice I ever had, use it every day and has saved my bacon many times, probably from someone who thought he was an 8 - 10. Remember the idiot ion the old Triumph who pulled out in front of me last summer? I anticipated that, and a good job I did.

Hmmmmmm, how do I rate my driving, I would say a 6, others may disagree, I travel a fair few miles in a year mainly on A roads in a van (not white I hasten to add) with no oomph so to progressively move through traffic reading the road and anticipation is part of the daily drive for me.

My mate Mark I've put him as a 9 he drives for a living he's got the fastest lap around the iom ,he's multiple British rally champs he's James Bond and can jump in almost any car and push it to its limits.driving normally seems so effortless when we're just going off somewhere his reactions are on a different level he probably isn't the best driver in the world but he's pretty close.ive been with a few professional race drivers they are different.on a dirt bike however ........
