How do they do it?

Mate of mine had his credit card go on holiday a couple of years ago. Seems like it had a fine time in Ireland, whilst Roger carried on working in Folkestone.:) Got it all back once he'd proved he wasn't even in the same country as the spending.

Mine got cloned in Folkestone and went touring around surrey and Hampshire filling up at BP stations.

A call from the bank (Nationwide) asking if i had been to guildford or Portsmouth recently ?
Near £ 400 was back in the account next day.

I've always wondered about this, I travel a lot for work from Liverpool to Kent and a lot in between and us my card for fuel, food, accommodation etc and I buy loads on line, wonder how my bank would spot unusual activity on my account?

It's amazing how they do Niall, our cards providers are regularly asking what we're doing and was it us? Quite often in the USA.

Tony.

Never had any problems using Visa Card, traveled all over the world using it.

I've had new cards show up out of the blue. Reasons were given that there was suspicious charges in the USA. I had been in Missouri shortly before and the charges I had made while there never showed up on my bill!! Go figure, JIM
Oh I did contact them and told them where I'd been but they said the case was closed now so enjoy!!

Years ago I purchased an electric cement mixer from a builders merchant for use between me and my 3 older brothers.

On returning home I realised that I had lost my card and cancelled it. Never got charged for the mixer, also forgot that my brothers had paid me £30 each . Payback time for years of being their punch bag when we were kids =)).

A couple of years ago, in town doing a big christmas shop.
Was in HMV getting the boy a couple of PS4 games at cash point put in card and entered pin
the cashier said sorry i have just been prompted to make a phone call, moment please.
Cashier made thje call and then handed me the phone, it was my bank and they asked for
security questions then asked

"Have you recently purchased £100 worth of LEGO?"
"Yes" was my reply
Reply "Ah that's ok then then, just checking as we thought it a little unusual"

I thanked them for their detectiveness

Update - Result, money refunded yesterday, though the total taken was more than initially thought, £750 in all .
