You should try driving in the USA!. We were following a truck towing a trailer across the bridge over Tampa Bay some years ago. The trailer was very shallow sides with no tailgate at all!. On the trailer, amongst other stuff was a step ladder which was bouncing around and working it's way towards the back end of the trailer. Eventually the inevitable happened and the steps fell off the back of the trailer, hit the road surface, bounced up into the air and (luckily for us) landed on the bonnet (hood) of the car following us. We did not stop. Trailers don't appear to even need any lights on them. You can bolt a carrier onto a towbar to carry almost anything even if they obscure your rear lights. Unbelievable really.
