Well we haven't had a horror story for a while but then in the space of 2 days we have 2.
First one, on Friday afternoon a young guy comes in with a noisy O/S/R brake on his Clio and I was asked to see what was wrong. Having removed the rear wheels, after running the rear brakes in the roller brake tester I had to agree that the problem was with the O/S/R for sure, this is what I found.

As you can see the leading brake shoe lining is worn completely down to the metal of the shoe. You can also see the state of the wheel cylinder, obviously leaking brake fluid quite badly, imagine the condition of the brake drum after seeing the next photo.

And that's the trailing shoe which does the least amount of work.
He was quoted £260 for new shoes, cylinders and a pair of new drums. He said he couldn't afford it and I had a little sympathy for him, but that quickly evaporated when he said " I first heard the noise about 2 months ago" What a muppet !!!!

These people drive amongst us on a street near you.

Tony.

Did you consider looking at the front too? If he lets the rears that do less work I shudder to think what's going on at the front!

I could see that the front pads had plenty of life left in them through the holes in the wheel rims Ian, probably more by luck than judgement though.

I think the new generation, which doesn't react to noises for two months, needs on the car special systems to "shut down the car", like they do with the IT!
It's the only way they understand nowadays! Seriously!

So typical these days people just run their cars into the ground then wonder why they can't afford to repair.
Tony do you do tyres at your work and if so what's the weirdest thing you've found to puncture it

Sadly you could be right Dan, but mostly because most people have no concept of how a car works so a noise is just a noise until its too late. My old boss from the 80's had a saying for such times and that was, "You can always get by, by paying"

Yes we do tyres mate, but I really can't think of anything weird off the top of my head. Seen some truck tyres that the outside fitters have brought back to the depot though.

looks too big for .22 and isn't rimfire.

if its .357, i'd have thought air pressure would have pushed it back out.

I was thinking something off a pair of jeans too - a rivet looks too small, so maybe a metal button?

Going back to the brakes, if cars had wifi, they could post their faults to the kids facebook page, then they might pat attention
