Horrible Steering Shudder

Hi guys :)

Just drove the car for the first time (on private land) and have some quite violent juddering coming through the steering wheel. It was manoeuvred extremely slowly, there are no leaks, car was previously sat for a few months and this is the first time the steering has been used whilst the engine is on.

The juddering was on and off whilst using the steering, I was going no more than 1 or 2mph so it's not anything to do with wheel balance. It felt like the steering rack wanted to jump ship :(

Any ideas guys? :(

Probably bushes mate

You'll always have shudder on these cars due to the rigidity of the chassis. If it's too much it points to lollipop bushes or the ball joints on the front control arm

Not sure it's the bushes, it is fully polybushed

...actually wonder if it is the hard bushes?

@Cheddars sounds like front caliper seized. Jack the front wheels and see how easily the front wheels spin when you turn them. Easiest way is new calipers or if you are spanner friendly new pistons and seals. You might be able to free them of but it will only be a temporary repair until is stands for another while.

I've had a strange judder when starting the car after a long period of no use - only when the steering is turned and low speed then goes away after a minute or so. I think it must be PAS related but not leaking fluid or making any funny noises.

It also happens in a particular multi-storey car park with rubberised floors when wet in winter - happens in the galaxy too.

Thanks Dino, that's exactly what it did, no funny noises, it was just a horrible vibration. I've never had it in any car so assumed the worst, but guess it's normal.

Possible belt slip? Had this at work before. Has it gone away or still there?

I'll have a look into the belt, I did get coolant all over it when removing waterpump, thermostat, etc

Otherwise, it is still doing it :(

I would look at the brakes as said if the discs are in poor state and a caliper is binding it would give you these kinda symptoms.
As said Jack up the front and see what if anything is binding:thumbsup:

Might be a while sorting the brakes - both front discs and all pads came but missing the rear discs
