I don't recall races being held at the location in this video but I'm sure some will.
The place itself was of some importance for me over the last ten years or so - The large tower is Crystal Palace - TV and radio is broadcast to over 11m people from there. It was one of the locations central to my job and is still important for UK broadcasting. Yet, the history of the park in which it is located was never mentioned.

Wonder if we would be allowed a meet there

Top speed on that track was 78mph ha ha

Fantastic. Thank you.

My Mum’s family come from the area and we lived here until I was 10. I spent a lot of time up at Crystal Palace as a child as there were a lot of activities.

Funnily enough just last night I glanced the book on the racetrack I got for my Dad recently. He’s a keen historian. But didn’t know either.

A very well kept ‘secret’ for some reason.

Always wondered exactly where the circuit was so great to see. And love the fact club racing is still done there which I didn’t know.

I chuckled at the line up of cars... ford anglia, Hillman imp to name a couple

Look a little and you'll still find them being raced.

I grew up a few miles from there, always wanted to visit but never got round to it.

Aaah the good old days Ian when the health and safety manual was a pamphlet and not a telephone directory .

Stephen.

I took part in a cycle race there about 1963-64 as a junior rider. The main race was won by Tommy Simpson, he and a couple of other cycling stars of the day, Alan Ramsbottom and Michael Wright lapped the field.

On the actual race track ?

Yes the cycle races were held on the motor race circuit. It was and still is common for cycle races to be held on motor race circuits. I have raced numerous times at Goodwood on a Tuesday evening 50 miles = 20 laps I personally couldn't do it now, over the hill now.

Crystal Palace used to be a well known track. I'm sure I remember James Hunt having an 'incident' there where he had a bit of 'aggro' with another driver when they got out of the cars. 'Hunt the shunt' in his early days.:)

My wife’s auntie & uncle lived just round the corner from Crystal Palace and back in the 70s when we stayed with them we went to the park for a walk around. Remember thinking how narrow the track was for racing. Also remember the dinosaurs near the lake.

Actually , I think it was a marshall that Hunt punched if my memory serves me well. All in the heat of the moment.
Amazing what little nuggets get unearthed from a random post that I thought might interest a few people

Thanks for the video @hard top, and it jogged my memory.Getting confused, which I am most of the time these days. He punched the marshall in Canada, but what I was thinking of at Crystal Palace was a F3 race when there was a crash right at the end. Hunt climbed out of his car and stormed off down the track and had a barney with the other driver. Can't remember who it was.
