Hi and welcome to the forum. ABS lights could be sensors as others have said. You need to get codes read. Best tool is INPA software which runs as a virtual machine on a PC. You can buy it from https://www.bcables.com. You will need the round pin cable adapter to connect it to the socket under the bonnet (in front of the fuse box). For your X3 it will be a different cable adapter.
The fault should have been an MOT fail if present when tested. See what codes come up on the reader and ask on here for help if required.
Probably worst case is the it is an ABS module fault. Don't panic. Although a replacement from BMW would be £1500, there are repair options for about £200 or diy fixes for very little cash. Problem has previously been traced to a couple of dry solder joints inside the "sealed" case. With you background you will be teaching us how to fix it if it turns out to be this. There are a couple if threads on here that will be of help.
Remember you don't have ABS if the light stays on and enjoy your car whilst the sun shines and you investigate the issue.
If you can join in with the Lakes Run. Nice day out and chance to meet other members.
