As you can just about see in this picture my bumper light is on as switch is position 1 but I have no rear lights and no lights in the headlight unit.

OK so small update. I have gone through my engine bay fuse box and pulled and checked every single fuse and they are all good.

I have also replaced the relay which I believe is for the dipped beam in case that was at fault...

My headlights are so far as I can tell original fit.

So I am still stumped. Part of me thinks the only other thing could be the headlight switch however I don't understand how since when I pull to position 1 the front bumper and interior dashboard lights come on.

If the switch was faulty surely in position 1 nothing would work?

Welcome to the Forum. If you give your location then possibly someone in your area might give you assistance to sort the problem. It would be much easier to compare your car with another to see what the difference is with it being an import.
Really helpful bunch of owners on here, so might be the way to go.

Jimmy, we have several guys on here who regularly break Z3s. Possibly one of these fine fellows could loan you a known working lighting switch to try, and then see what happens.

Can you post front picture pos 2 .
The picture you have posted is correct
Position 1 should only put the bumper lights on .
But should illuminate rear tail light and number plate light also.
You have a facelift zed going by the chrome liight surround there is no position light in the headlight unit on facelift only indicator dip and main beam

I agree with Stevo, many of the later Zeds don't have side lights in the headlight clusters, so it's only the rears that don't work properly, I don't think they go through the boot loom (common failure point), so I'd check the wiring behind the side boot carpets, if you're local to Woking, I'm happy to lend you working parts to trial fit.

and welcome to the forum

It might be worth checking your rear tail light bulbs are working - including number plate lights if currently not working.

Big shout out to the top man Spurs Fan.

I had to go down to portland for work on Thursday and stay the night before heading back home to Kent Yesterday.

Thursday evening looking through eBay spotted a headlight switch for sale in Surrey. Bingo.

Emailed seller at about 11pm Thursday asking if I could swing by on the way home Friday to try the switch.

Woke up Friday morning to a message saying the seller would be at work but would leave the switch and tools out and I could swing by and try the switch.

When I got there his wife was home and handed me a box with all the bits.

Unfortunately it turns it it was not the switch. His wife was also a total superstar and found me the key to a Z3 he had just bought and when I pulled switch out to position 1 the lights on it came on as mine used to so I am deffo not losing my mind.

BTW spurs fan you REALLY need a better organisation system for your car keys :) I had to try half a dozen before we found the right one.
