Hi everyone, I’m harley.

I have a manual 2.8 z3 roadster (June 97) which I’m restoring/ upgrading.
It has huge sentimental value as it was my late mother’s, and I may have convinced her to spend the kitchen renovation money on it at the time!

if anyone has a 2.8 and has any links for the following questions (which I’m sure have been asked millions of times) I’d really appreciate it.

1) Bilstein B12 kit. Which is the right code! Even the bilstein website doesn’t ref the 2.8 but the Turner website does. I think I need the 46-189509 kit, but I want to make sure the springs have the right rate for the engine/ chassis mass and the dampers have the correct coefficient.

2) Does anyone have experience in doing the fabled manifold mod from the 325ci ??? I think that reduces restriction and gives a little more performance

3) I've done a lot of the main service jobs such as engine, gearbox and diff oil changes (establishing I don’t have an LSD on mine) and I’m now working on sorting the tramlining and general vagueness of the steering and suspension mainly : https://zroadster.org/articles/bmw-z3-subtly-stiffening-a-z3-by-mike-fishwick.44/
But one concern I have is coming on and off the throttle, as the car goes through the neutral load condition between acceleration and deceleration (vice versa) there’s a nocking which feels like play in the drive line.
Anyone have experience of this, I.e is it likely to be :
Drive shaft wear/ gearbox mounts/ diff mounting/ diff wear/ rear suspension Bush wear or..... god forbid a bit of everything

Any help with any of the above is hugely appreciated

Thanks
Harley

Hi, welcome from Mansfield

In terms of the suspension I think @andyglym used the Bilstein B12 kit

In terms of the 2.5 manifold, I think @Lee has some experience with this

Thanks Andy. Don’t suppose you remember what the code was? . No problem if not. I’ve managed to get reply from bilstein and they say the code I’ve ref above is correct but just want to be sure before spending £700+!.

Hi, sorry I can't as they've been on a few years now. It's basically the Bilstein B12 Pro kit with the Eiback Springs, lowered by 30mm.

From my digging there seems to be a different code for the B12 Bilstein pro kit, depending on the model of Z3. For the obvious reason that the larger engine cars are a heavier sprung mass.
The sub 2L cars have kit 46-189493
The 2.0/2.2 and 2.8 have kit 46-189509
Then... I stopped looking as I found the info I needed but I will try and write this up as a separate thread and anything I learn regarding fitting etc.

The drive train knock seems to be common on Z3 s. My 2.8 had a very obvious and quite loud knock after only 30k miles. My 2.2 had some play as well. Lot's of references to this on the net.

Thanks it’s not terrible on mine and it’s at 80k so won’t worry too much for now then.

Hi guys. I’ve been making good progress with the B12 kit fitting. Front done and now starting on the rear. However I’ve noticed the abs/ wheel speed sensor / brake pad wear sensor connector boxes at the back are missing lids. (Probably some s*** mechanic years back)
Anyone know what they’re called so I can order new ones? Pics attached
