Thanks everyone, quite a friendly bunch around here, I'm pleased to see!

Turns out Mrs Buze told me we could keep the Clio as well -- given it's value is around 800 quid, it's almost not worth the trouble selling it anyway...
Take your time - and take time to carefully inspect bodywork hood and rear window - underneath - under carpets for dampness - boot weld seams. Best of luck in getting a great car!
Thanks for that! I already noticed a rather nice car online that seems to have a cracked rear window..

Hi @buze,:welcome: to the forum from me, a very happy 2.2 owner in Staffordshire:thumbsup:. As said earlier try out different Zeds before you buy. Good luck with your search.

Well, off I go; called a couple of Zeds (unsuccessfully so far) and emailed one, oh and I also /messaged/ @duckhunt about his. Also checked comparethemarket for insurance quotes, and apparently insuring a 2.8 would cost me <~400 quid, so we're definitely full on!

Hi @buze firstly welcome on here from me near Lincoln. Secondly, do yourself a favour, if you can afford to, buy a 2.8 because believe me you will be hooked with these cars they're great fun and this forum is a very special place to belong to.
I had a 2.0 Z3 till a couple of years ago and if I'm honest if I'd bought a 2.8 I would still have it now. However I found I wanted something with a bit more go and I find my 3.0 Z4 and bought it. Give Sam's @duckhunt car some serious consideration mate it has had a LOT of work done, all documented on here. Good luck which ever way you decide to go mate.

Tony.

Thanks everyone! So far the hunt is a bit thin tho. @duckhunt's mom beat me to his Z, and another two failed to return messages so far. Oh well. Patience you all said, patience I shall try ;-)

Depends how you will use the car. My M44 1.9 is enjoyable as a daily run around and a short commute (38 plus mpg). The 3.2 MC is excellent for long journeys and "playtime" (best 25 mpg). Both are great cars in their own way.

Welcome from Canada !! Try as many as you can but don't discount the 1.9 as it handles like a sports car should! JIM

I'm actually not discounting anything, BUT, the difference in price between a 1.9 and a 2.8 is actually completely negligible at the moment, that's why I've been aiming for the 2.2 or 2.8 car. I wouldn't discount any nice car tho!

Well, I'm now booked to see several cars. Turns out the are quite a few of them as mentioned, which is nice! I've selected just the 2.8 for now, if I were not to like any, I might start encompassing the 2.2's, but so far, I can get a low-ish mileage 2.8 in good to very good nick for <4500. I saw a couple of other more expensive (with extra low mileage) but I'm not too bothered for now.

Would a nice forum 'expert' give me a bit of personal tuition in PM? I don't necessarily want to post links on the public forum, it becomes a bit of a dead givaway ;-)

Thanks a lot @Andy-M ! Added to the list. I tried one car today. Very tidy, 'stock' 2.8, I need to debrief with the Mrs, but I want to see more cars of course. This one actually was nice, 98% clean that I could see, and drove very well, however it was red (out) and black (in) which is a bit bland...

welcome & good hunting, the dreaded tin worm is just starting to show on some cars, but the bolt on panels make this fairly easy to fix, the engines are strong so high mileage as long as it's been cared for should not be an issue
