I've had a 1997 2.8 wide-body Z3 for over 15 years and love it. But the time has come to move on, so I've bought a six-year-old Z4 E89 35i. I'm getting too old to remove and replace the Z3 hard top each year, so the E89 appeals. I've been surprised at the difference between the Zs. The Z4 seems much bigger, heavier and more civilised - but possibly less fun, with more to go wrong. Has anyone else made the transition?

Hi, welcome from Mansfield.

Got a '97 prefacelift 1.9 and 2.8 myself. Love both of them and can't see me changing.

There are a few members on here who have recently upgraded to an E89 and from what I hear they do like them.

How very true .. My Z4 has had run-flats replaced with standard tyres. I know that the tyre pressures should be the same if the tyre footprints are the same, but I can't get that information anywhere - usually just uninformed speculation. Life seemed much simpler with the Z3.

Hi and welcome from me near Lincoln. I only made one step up the ladder to an E85 Z4 from my Z3.

Tony.

I’ve had a Z3 it was a great fun car to have .
Then we changed to the Z4 ( soft top ) , it was nearly 15 years old and we sold it last Monday ,
We just bought another Z4 but more up to date, we got it Saturday, I’m so happy with it :coolsteer)

Like the Z3 personally; any regrets?

Thank you everyone for your warm welcomes.
Today, I checked the coolant on the Z4 with a refractometer and it showed about 43% antifreeze content. I then called at Halfords to check the type of antifreeze recommended and was relieved to find that it's ethylene glycol, which will give me protection to -20'. If it had been propylene glycol, the protection would only extend to -6'.
The Z3 has just had the water pump and thermostat replaced, so I assume that it should be winter-ready.
I also got the track-in checked on the Z4 - OK, thankfully.
