In September I will need to drive from the M25 west of London to Cornwall. Is it best to take the M4 to Bristol to join the M5 or the M3 then A303 towards the M5 further south ?
I would be starting in the early hours if that makes much difference.

Depends whether you are in any sort of hurry. M4 M5 is very boring M3 A303 would be a lot slower but more scenic and if its South Devon you could then take the A30 and would be no need for the M5

Sorry misread your post doh

So depending where in Cornwall you are going you could still do as i said and just stay on the A30

I am fine Ken thanks. Off on Euro trip in a couple of weeks so busy getting everything ready. Hope you are well also.
I used to do alot of driving around the Devon Cornwall area years ago and sometimes travelled from Guildford to both areas. The M4 should be clear in the early hours but i hate motorways so i used to take A roads just to break it up

Good to hear you're well.It was noted that we hadn't seen you for a while at Zedfest yesterday. Enjoy your Euro trip.

I was hoping to pop in on Sunday but was still busy painting the discs and calipers oooh and waxing the wheels ready for winter

If it's early doors and you want to arrive in good time I'd go M4 as that time of morning not to much will be about and most will be heading the other way. Scenery wise, as stated, avoid the motorway.

M4 / M5 Will make a quick dent in the journey, then enjoy the scenery Exeter onwards.

Def go M3 the A303 then A30. I'm from Weybridge, so often do that route.

4hours to Perranporth with a stop for a coffee and a yum yum!

OK, thanks folks, looks like a toss up between speed and enjoyment ! I think I'll just see how I feel when I get to the M25. Obviously I wouldn't normally be going to Cornwall from Derbyshire via London ! Picking up a relative on route.

M25 jtn 10 to Guilford, then pick up A35 to Winchester M3 junction at Winnall, then couple of junctions up A34 to the A303. Stay on A303 till you get Illminster roundabout and then take A30 all the way to Exeter. Get on M5 jtn 29 and leave at jtn 31 A30. then keep going until you need to get off to your final destination. I regularly work in Dartford area and this is the route I take home to Truro

I've done both several times, M4 / M5 usually a lot quicker and less frustrating but its a boring drive. The 303 depends on the time of day and time of year. This time of year I would always go via the motorway.

A303 West bound isn't too bad if you get on before midday. I'm in Portsmouth all week and take A303 home every Friday without any real problems. I usually leave Pompey around 10.30am

You might get held up at Stonehenge but once you're clear you should be ok

Well you're best placed to advise mate, I'm a semi southerner not a real one ;);)

Going through the night I'd go M4/M5. Just get the miles done as quickly as possible.
At other times I'd go M3, A303 etc. Stonehenge is always bad in my experience though.

Alternatively, if you have a couple of weeks, go the scenic route. M40, off through the cotswolds, north a bit up the A38 and then up through the Derbyshire Dales, on to the Yorkshire Dales, over the A66 into the Lakes, down the M6 a little, off in to Snowdonia and then down Cardigan bay, down through St Davids and then off to the Brecon Beacons, Bristol and Bath, Salisbury plain and on to the New Forest, through Devon and on to Cornwall through Dartmoor.
