Help Zs!

About an hour ago I noticed my door locks - silver internal up down locks on top of door cards - looked odd. Upon inspection, the driver’s side was down and the passenger side was up suggesting locked and unlocked respectively.

I’ve dug out jump leads and with the help of a friend, tried to jump start the engine; my thinking it’s a flat battery.

I turned the ignition key and just a click sound.

Car open and can’t lock it so am wondering what the heck this is....and watching vigilantly over it.

Any ideas?

I would manually lock the passenger door from the inside and the use the key to manually lock the drivers door and boot. This should suffice until you can either charge or replace the battery.

I can’t jump start the battery so am thinking it’s something else? If I do manage to lock the car, which I can’t even lock the driver’s door manually, I won’t then be able to get it open...

When I turn the ignition, it’s clicking once and then nothing. That’s when jump leads are connected too.

Why can't you lock the driver's door with the key from outside Dawn, does it just "spin"?

Tony.

Well, I’m putting the key in and turning it and the silver lock is simply staying where it is. So I can’t lock the car.

Could it be the immobiliser???

Sure sounds like a flat or dead battery.:(

Tony.
Jump leads connected and couldn’t turn the engine on over to let it charge....

You know when you need sleep - that feeling...I have it and am sitting watching my car*
*could be a long night.

Its a flat battery
I’m reading up now....we didn’t run the rescue vehicle for 10 minutes before I tried to turn over the ignition. Rescue vehicle gone to bed now so I’m waiting for the AA to come out as I can’t lock the car manually.

Thanks @Jjim @t-tony and @Sean d you were all right. The battery was flat. AA man charged in a second off a super piece of kit and then, rather than have my car idling noisily in the dark of night, I’ve had a spin for 30mins! Beautiful in the night’s dark and very peaceful. Will have Halfords check the battery out during tomorrow. Sleep beckons so sleep well, one and all.

That's good news Dawn. I can rest easy now;). Night mate.:)

Tony.

ps. It is nice having a drive in the dark. Did you have the roof down? Only downside is bugs in your hair. Ask me how I know.=))

Not this time but next time. This late night driving sure is good for the soul.
Sleep well matie

For batteries have a look on Eurocarparts. As they often have a sale on their website on batteries - usually 50% off

Thanks Jim.
Will EuroCarParts check my existing battery like Halfords?

Not sure, I've never asked them to check a battery health.

Thanks Jim. Not to worry. Halfords is closer to me and the AA person said they do a free battery check so I’ll pop across.

Jump starting won't always start a car. And the supplying engine should be rev'd up to a charging speed like 2,500 rpm.

If the battery is fine you'll want to have a think what caused this.

Thanks for advice.
I’m off to get the battery checked out in a bit and will report back.
