Can you post a photo ? I had to remove a lot of rust before I could get the correct allen bit into the heads, but once engaged, the bolts came out fairly easily (after soaking in penetrant of course). I replaced them with a hex head HT bolt.

Probably a wise decision, hard to tell from here. Would be interesting to see the state of the bits that are to be replaced, I for one haven't heard of the "push rods" being that bad before, not that I know everything. Just hope that things don't get worse as the dismantling goes on.

These are the bolts that I removed. The heads had so much rust on that I couldn't tell what Allen key size they were. However the threads were quite reasonable and so once I'd got the bit properly engaged in the recess, they came out easily.

I can't understand why they used Allen bolts!

Not relevant now, but may be of use in the future.

Not sure of the access, but sometimes you can weld a nut onto the head. Weld through the centre of the nut. The nut gives something to turn and the heat from the welding loosens the thread.

Try some of this I used it on mine and it worked a treat. If you drill it out do a pilot hole it to the threaded part otherwise when you take the head off it will be a mightmare trying to drill the rest of it.

I'm still not sure what to do. Whether to just cast the car loose. Then look for a cleaner car. I don't have the means to do the job myself. So will always have to go to a garage, where the Labour cost is a burden.
I wouldn't give up, if its a generally good car better to fix it than buy another with god knows what problems. Of course only you can determine that.

Made the decision to complete the repair, parts ordered.
Sorry no pics as Zed in a garage.
Good on you Paul. Make sure your garage reassemble everything with plenty of suitable anti seize compound...
,,,not that you will need to take it apart again!

Never say never I say, the car is likely to last another 20 years, better to make it easier in future

After my panic last week, work done and passed MOT yesterday. Only one advisory, suspension arm has slight play in a ball joint offside front lower.
So car taxed and ready to roll. Added bonus was much cheaper than expected:thumbsup: Phew:whistle:
Happy Bunny
Good news Paul.
