Hello, all. Problem with z3 rear speakers.

I always thought the Z3 was the most beautiful roadster out there, and when I had an opportunity to purchase a 1998, my wonderful wife insisted that I do it, since the money wasn't earning anything in the bank at current rates, and she knew how much I admired these cars. So I've been enjoying this thing for about a month now, and driving it has been a real mood heightener!

I've had one minor problem, involving the rear speaker(s): there's a sharp crack or snapping sound, especially at bass frequencies. Wondering if this is a loose connection, or the speaker itself, and most especially, how to access the rear speakers. Any help much appreciated.

Sounds like the speaker is shot, and might have a rip in it. Will need to be inspected.

Bit of a pain to get to the rear speakers, as you will need to remove the storage compartment behind the seats - lots of screws and caps to be removed, and then the seat belt covers. You will also need to remove the roll hoops, if you have these.

You will then be able to access the plastic trim where the speakers are.

Thanks for the welcome, from here at Alpine, NY, U.S., about 30 minutes from Ithaca, in the Fingerlakes region of New York State (Ithaca is home to Cornell U.).

Jjim, thanks for the info--sounds intimidating, especially as I really don't want to mess anything up in this beauty. I'm going to out now and look that area over.

Mine did the same and the cones where shot they can be brought from BMW but it depends on what you have fitted is it yhe H.K system do you have a subwoofer in the centre instead of a lock box ?
If so you have an amped system and they use quite odd Ohm rated speakers.
I replaced mine for 4 inch cleaned the sound up nicely.
Hope you get a fix and :welcome:

Yeah, it looks like a subwoofer in the center. There's a place in Ithaca that does car audio, with a guy specializing in BMW's. They said on the phone that too much volume might have blown one or all of the speakers. I'll probably take it there and upgrade the rears while I'm at it. I can see how the cowling comes off, but I'd rather not muddle around with it myself.

Don't listen to the car stereo very often. I much prefer the music coming out of the exhaust pipes and from under the bonnet! Oops.... sorry I meant the hood!...:D

Yeah, it certainly does have a nice, throaty hum, kind of like a swarm of bees in your bonnet.

It's called clipping. basically, even the Harmon kardon system is rubbish by today's standards and can struggle.

Worth upgrading to new stuff

Thanks for the welcomes!

No, Burt's not my brother, probably a very, very distant relation; but I am a musician--sax and mandolin. Check out coyotebluesband.com . I've been driving to gigs in the Z3; makes some of the far ones something now to look forward to. I can just fit my tenor case and mando, with two gear bags, into the trunk. The rest of my gear stays in the band van. And when I pull up in the Z3, in my pork pie and shades, people think I'm some kind of rock star, even though some of their trucks cost three times as much as the roadster.

Here's a pic of the Z. Color is Violettrot-ll. This is a six-month a year car, because the winters here can be pretty severe, and they use salt on the roads. It will winter over either in here, or in the overhang to the right, if I can get the hay out of there (my last horse died a couple of years ago, and I don't think I'll be getting another one), put some plywood on the interior wall, and hang a sliding door on the front before late November, when the car comes off the road.
