We live 2mins from the airport and Mother dearest was there. She said everyone was in stunned silence when it happened. I hope the casualties aren't as serious as first suggested.

Surely it is time to restrict the flying to the space over the airfield. I could not care about the plane
,but normal folk just driving along the highway. I do hope the casualties are minimal, but I fear not.

The air display regs in the UK are probably the most stringent in the world with displays only being allowed parrallel to crowds and other risks catered for so whilst I agree with what you are saying, unfortunately easier said than done. Any number of catastrophic failutes could make an aircraft take one direction or another with no hope for the pilot. All the same, very sad and tragic for all concerned :(

We where at the air display at Bournemouth today and they seem to do all the acrobats and stunts off shore.
But saying that a couple of years ago one of the red arrow pilots was killed.

There was a major overhaul in the airshow regs when one of the Italian team crashed into the crowd some years ago. On this one it could have been a variety of issues, if the pilot survives I'm sure all will become clearer.

Forget the regs , I assume this display conformed with them all,but people driving along the highway have been killed due to aircraft performing in an area outside that which would result in them landing inside the display area if an incident occurs, I note you do not say it can not be done, just not easy to do.
An alternative would be for performances to be held over the open sea, which I assume could be cleared of boats for the event.
The people killed in this incident were not those watching or participating but passing motorists.

Not a good year for aviation. I think this will lead to tighter restrictions on where displays can take place.

I often wondered about the Air show at Waddington near Lincoln, thankfully nothing bad ever happened there. We did see some of the aircraft out our way but not directly overhead.

Over the last few years at Waddo I think this the closest they have been to an incident.

there are more people killed each year crossing the road than in aviation accidents so to start on about airshows being unsafe isn't really fair.
it would be impossible to keep a display in the confines of an airfield unless it is a helicopter display.
ok, so there has been a couple of accidents at shows this year but it seems to me that people pick up on these rare events and then the next thing you know they are trying to get airshows banned.
it has been a sad year for airshows and my thoughts are with those injured and those who have lost their lives.

I completely fail to understand the comparison, people crossing the road have made that move of their own accord, and can carry out the risk involved. In this case people are just driving along the major highway and are killed by a plane that is being used for a demonstration.
In this case the risk to the general public could easily have been reduced if the demonstration had taken place over the sea . only a couple of miles away. Spectators could have sat on the sea front. I will be watching an event at Rhyl next weekend, the event is held over the sea, and we will watch from an adjacent hillside.
I am in no way calling for stopping air shows, just that they are carried out in a manner to minimise the risk to people who are not involved in any way with the event.
While sending this I can hear a spokesman on BBC saying accidents in these events only effects the pilots, also saying all the aircraft carrying out this move stay above 500ft,so the pilot was not following the guidelines.[08.20hrs].
I think all our thoughts are with the families of those killed, but I would like to see simple changes to reduce the risk of this occurring again.

Got to say your argument doesn't really stack up.millions of people cross the road themselves every day air shows are much less common. However we have to a certain amount of risk or we would all be running around in bubble wrap.but that doesn't make it any easier for the innocent people caught up in the event
