Thanks it's nice to be appreciated

I bought a halfords jack and axle stands.
They not great. The jack starts to drop height fairly quickly. I never go under the car without stands anyway.

The holes for the pins on the axle stands don't line up properly so make it awkward to adjust.

Writing this makes me wonder why I never took them back, been a couple of years now so too late :(

I guess it depends on how often your liking to use this type of garage equipment.
My brother has a low profile jack which cost him £150 but then again his always messing about with vehicles.

Personally I would not buy a jack such as these. Yes they're rated to lift 2ton and hold it while you put stands in place, but they are so narrow they're very unstable on anything but a "snooker table" smooth floor. People such as Sealey sell jacks which are far better for not much more than double the cost. Save your money and buy a decent Jack. Also a better Jack will lift higher and make working under a supported cat much easier too ! Buy cheap - buy twice.

Tony.

We sometimes carry out tests on garage equipment such as jacks, axle stands, engine cranes, engine lifting beams etc etc that supposedly arrive on our shores with CE marks and Machinery Directive certs and to be honest we rarely see anything that meets UK standards.

We can all use anything we want to use in our own garages with no problems at all. However some suppliers ask us to certify or approve some of their products so that they can actively sell them for "industrial use"

We have quite strict rules in the UK when it comes to commercial lifting operations and most of the cheap kit that is currently on sale to the public does not meet these rules.

Check out LOLER : 1998 (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. These statutory requirements are part of PUWER : 1998 ( Provision and Use of Works Equipment Regulations 1998 )

Any equipment that your employer supplies you with to carry out your work must comply fully with these regulations.

If you need a jack and stands, buy good quality commercial quality equipment.

Amen =))

Well said Garry. The Halfords gear is at best adequate and as such better than nothing but in my humble opinion it is false economy in the end.

Tony.

Whilst I would agree with you Gary can I ask you to advise the cost of a commercial jack and then way up how often a guy like my self who wants to take a wheel off once in a blue moon.
Surely a cost effective jack is better than a bottle or scissor jack.
I think it's a case of horses or course

I thought I'd post this picture to show the difference excuse the mess wasn't pulling them out at this time of night for a good picture. The blue jack is a 2t Halfords jack i bought a couple of years ago more as a supplementary jack ( for jacking up arm doing springs etc)
The red jack is my 3t garage jack that me £130 about 7 yrs ago ( had a people carrier at the time wouldn't trust anything else to jack it.
The long and short is the garage jack a far safer option but also a lot less portable. (probably 5 times heavier than Halfords jack) but far greater lifting height and way better stability

The lads in the tyre bay at work use jacks such as your taskmaster one there Steve. They don't last that long in a busy tyre bay environment (probably a year or so) but for D.I.Y. use they'll last for years and at about £60 each they are throw away items when they start to leak past the seals and start to creep down.

Tony.

But what i would like to say is depends what you plan to do with it.
Like @Low Rider would probably only ever remove a wheel every now and again Halfords jack well safer that original.
But someone like @t-tony who could do more involved stuff like myself the garage jack the only thing to have.
For example @Low Rider just got his exhaust gearbox mounting changed .
garage jack and axle stands I'd have a zed at 45' on 2 wheels and be under it wouldn't be doing that with a Halfords jack

Yeah we used to use them till partco went bust but think how many times they go up and down in a busy tyre bay before they start to wear in personal use you'd need to be pretty busy to wear them out too quickly
