The Zed had been demoted to the drive, not used for a couple of months and the garage filled with furniture while we have been decorating the house.

It has been nicely tucked away in a waterproof, breathable car cover and connected to a trickle charger. As it was a nice day I decided to get it uncovered and out on the road.

This is what I found.

Mould

More mould

And more

A cloudy rear window

And if that weren't enough, bubbling paintwork on the bonnet.

Just to add insult to injury, an angel eye has given up the ghost.

On the plus side it started first time, drives ok and is now back in the garage.

The mould I can handle, but it looks like a respray or replacement for the bonnet :(.

That's not good mate. Surely there must've been an underlying issue with the paint for this to happen @Sean d

Most of the damage appears to be on the front section. It has been resprayed on that part sometime in its life, my guess is that they used water based paint. We had a lot of rain and a couple of sharp frosts a few weeks ago and I think this may have lifted the paint.

The mould will be down to moisture getting in which could be caused by the breathable cover letting in moist air. I have used a cover on ours for the last 3 years (fleece lined) and never had any issues. The paint as Andy says could be an underlying issue with the paint that the cover has assisted in lifting it away, very similar to when you get water under the paint.

That's the annoying part, I have used this cover (fleece lined) for 3 years and haven't had any issues with mould before. It has been on a longer than normal this time though.

I think 'breathable' is only up to a point. They should be uncovered periodically to allow to dry out properly, long term (2 months?) is not good to be covered for from what I understand. Micro blistering is a common problem in damp condition, judging by the sinkage to the paint it doesn't look that good a paint job in the first place. Bozzy uses a cover but is removed and the car 'aired' regularly hence no problems. Cellulose paint would micro blister quite easily.

That's a real swine Brian :(.
As Adrian suggested, two months is too long to leave the cover on the car. Longest I've left mine on is three weeks and had no problems so far.
Hope you can get the paint issue sorted mate.

You are correct on that Aidrian. It's one job that I have been putting off, I guess it will have to be tackled now.

I don't suppose you happen to have a Topaz bonnet looking for a new home?

I used to use a stormforce cover (i think it was called) never had any problems. Gentle steam cleaning might help the fabric, ive used the domestic handheld ones with a microfibre cloth over it on roof linings etc, kills bacteria and used gently won't cause damage. Probably key to make sure it is bone dry prior to covering.

The annoying thing is Steve, I took the cover off a couple of weeks ago to connect the charger and didn't notice anything wrong inside or out.

Sorry, can't help on that. You'll need to get that iffy paint removed prior to repainting. Sean d is your man, he did a crackin' job on bozzy's bonnet at a good price considering it's nearly half the car area wise. Iffy paint will just come back to haunt you if not dealt with appropriately. A real downer though to remove the 'protecting' cover to discover you'd have been better off without it :(

Possibly worth checking the carpet underlay for dampness too Bryan, if the car was dry when covered (and I'm guessing it was) the moisture must've been in there somewhere.

Maybe it was just those few weeks that made the difference sadly :meh:.
It's only because I use our zed through winter that keeps it well aired.
I'd love to have a garage or car port but it's not possible where we live, so when we eventually move, they're on the list.

Thanks Tony, I am suspecting that may be the case.

On a different note, is it your last day on Monday?

They certainly don't give an inch, tight sods, would have thought they'd let you have new years eve off as a freebie, as for your work clothes, I'm speechless!

Sorry to read of your sorrows Bryan and has made me wonder about my 3.0, she's SORNed at the moment and under a cover in the car port. It's more to keep the dust off than rain but may have to take a look soon.o_O

as for your work clothes
A few months ago they binned the company who washed/repaired our overalls etc. and gave us 3 pairs of new trousers. I wore 1 pair, 1 day and never wore them again. The most ill fitting and uncomfortable things I have ever had to wear at work,. Believe me they're more than welcome to have them back along with all the worn out shirts and sweat shirts, they can fill their bin with them, saves me the trouble.

Tony.
