Thanks for having me in your forum. This my first Z3, a 1997 1.9L with 272,200m on the ODO. While this is my first Z3, it is my 13th BMW. E24, E28, E30, E36, E36/5, E39s and now an E36/7. I currently maintain 8, of which, one is for my college Son and one for is for Wifie. This one was literally owned by a nice old lady who used to commute 180m a day for most of the car's life.

I started a renew thread for this Z3 on an E36/5 forum I am on.

http://www.318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42486

I look forward to learning and where I can, contributing to this forum. If I can help in any way, drop me a note.

Off now to continue the renewal...

Best regards, Rich (Aka BlackBMWs)

Hi, Rich, and welcome to the forum from Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey. I checked out your link to the other forum and was very impressed with all that you've done to the car so far. Before I for forget, If you're going to replace the top, make sure the new replacement is the correct one for your car. Some replacements don't have the necessary pieces of rubber stitched into them. These pieces attach to the frame and make a tight seal along the rear bend of the windows. I recently replaced the top on my '96 Z3 and the top was missing these pieces. Some new tops include new tension wires that fit into channels sewn into the top.
I was in California in March a year ago to pick up a 2000 Z3 ///M. I had seen it on Craigslist. I paid a deposit on it but didn't want to pay the balance until I saw the car in person. My cousin, who lives near San Diego looked at the car first and then I had the car inspected by his mechanic before coming out there. One of the other forum members, @miller1098 , flew over from Wales to help me drive the car back from California to New Jersey. He has a '99 Z3 ///M. Their ///Ms are over 300 horse power. Due to our standards, ours are about 240 hp. We had a great time driving it back. What an unbelievable car!!! Also, when you remove the old top, you can easily access the drainage holes on each side of the car and clean them out for good measure. Make sure to use good caulk tape between the bow and frame. Don't be worried if the top doesn't close completely on the first try. I had to place some weight on the opened front of the frame for 2 days before I could shut the top completely. Once closed, don't open it for at least a week.
I recently had my hood repainted as the clear coat had begun to peel.
I also have a 2002 325ci that I'm working on. Perhaps you can give me some advice. The car's steering seems a little tight and it 'wanders' to the left and right while on the highway. I was told that there's a universal link between the steering shaft and the rack. Do you know anything about this? Also, the top doesn't work. I haven't had the time to research the reason. I started to check the fuses which are in the glove box but I can't get it open. I can insert the key into the lock and it turns to the left and to the right. I thought if I unlocked it, I could try to pop it open. The problem is that I don't know which way to turn the key to unlock it. If I turn the key the wrong way and lock it and then try to force it open, I'll break the lock. Do you know which way the key is turned to unlock it? I want to try to access the drain hole for the top on the passenger side of the car. I believe there is a latch to disengage the back part of the top and lift it up. Do you know where this is?
Thanks for any help on these things. Most of the guys on this forum are from the UK. They are a great bunch of guys and aside from tech stuff, we have a great deal of fun on the forum. It is extremely friendly. They often go to meets or on cruises. I've been over there twice for different meets. I was always treated extremely well by all the members. They are very knowledgeable about the Z3 and Z4. Any questions you might have is welcome and there are many members who have the same model as you. Again, welcome to the forum. Frankie

Hello and welcome to the forum. 272000 miles is a few more than most on here, but it's comforting to know our cars are capable of those numbers

Hi Rich and welcome to our forum from a part time Floridian, usually near Lincoln UK. A car would soon rack up those miles on a daily 180 commute, but by far better for a car than short mileage commute where the motor barely gets warm! Enjoy the forum and your car.:)

Tony.

What a warm and gracious welcome from all of you. Thanks much and day by day I learn much about the car itself. I have my list of renewal items and am receiving parts as the week goes by. I am prepping one of my TIs (318 Compact) for track days at BimmerFest in California later this month, then I can turn more of my fuller attention to the Z itself. Ok anyway as I await parts to come in.

I did figure out that I have a zippered rear window on a great shape top, so I am awaiting receipt of the replacement and a Tonneau from your side of the Pond.

I will research the Subframe reinforcement kit to get that squared away before I fit a set of H & R sway bars and rear upper and lower braces. I'd be interested in knowing your impressions of the upper and lower Betrini rear braces.

Thanks again and I look forward to interacting with more of you.

Cheers! Rich

yup, my thoughts exactly. I sold my 533i with 473k miles on it and it was still Laguna Seca capable. My Son's M42 TI has I think 386k plus miles. High mileage dosent deter me if the body and frame are straight and the interior is in good condition. I can renew from there. ;)

Hi Frankie! Sorry for the late response here... Sounds like your 325ci are like the cars I end up working on. :) Great hobby fun!

325ci. Wanders due to the Steering Universal joint? Never encountered that. I know the joint and would check to see if it was binding or worn, but I have never had one go bad, even on the higher mileage cars. What suspension setup and tires to you have on the car itself? When I dropped in a set of coilovers and went to -2 camber, I did have a slight wandering effect until: i dropped tire pressure slightly and probably got used to it. My 318ic had that effect when i first placed a front strut brace on it, but I rather think it was tighter and less sloppy being a 26 year old tired Vert. An x-brace and strut brace stiffened that up nicely and resulted in it being more precise and perhaps a bit more responsive (Maybe seemed easier to wander)

Unlock is usually to the right. Perhaps the release rod sandwiched between the glove box door inside and outside plates is broken or off its mounts, so then you turn the key, it's not bumping the rod like it's supposed to to release the latch mechanism. Mine works great, so I haven't had to address it. I had heard somewhere that the Z glove boxes can become undone.

As far as the top, all mine are manuals, so i'm no help there, I know there is a latch, yes, you'd have to locate it. Is Bentley any help in this regard? I'll look on my friends 328ci when he comes around.

One note for sure, I am no mechanic by trade or impersonation, but rather by necessity. So, I tend to learn from folks in forums like this one and have had the cool opportunity to work on a few models over the years. The last few years, it seems I tend towards the M42s and M44s as my M62 is just a bit to thirsty to be practical as of late. ;)

Will drop in a set of Magnecor 8.5mm ignition wires I received in the mail today. That will permit me to remove the mismatched set in there now.

I'll test my sewing skills this weekend if the rain subsides. My zippered top is actually in very good shape aside from the stitching holding the zipper gave way. I'll head to the Marine boat shop to find some sturdy sailmakers thread in black and reattach the zipper with a handheld hemming machine I had lying around. I knew I kept that for some odd reason.

Next, I wondered why the rear end is soooo loose. (Subfloor is solid. :woot:) That's when I noticed the absense of a Anti Roll bar. I will remedy that soon enough with the appropriate rear braces.
