Going well, then bolt sheared!

Got on with the Oil Filter Housing today and after about an hour and 40 minutes, got it all stripped out and going well.

On the advice of @Grenville , I thought I would use that great Australian liquid to loosen off the bolts.

It was noticeable that the top LH bolt of the Housing, felt a bit odd as it was being undone
And got the job to this

I used an ice cream tub lid to make a cover to stop anything dropping inside while the area was cleaned.
Then, on putting the housing back on with the new gasket, after finger tightened, set the torque wrench to 5nm and went round, upped to 7nm and the first two ok, then the top one snapped.
Quickly undid all the other, removed the housing to find about 4mm sticking out the block. Fortunately it came undone and I checked the thread and all was ok. Seemed that the bolt just gave up ,

I have a great company locally that does all nuts and bolts etc and you can pay cash and get just what you need. Just as well, BMW couldn’t get one until Thursday.
I bought the two long ones plus the 4 small ones as thought it better to replace all, and all for the grand total of £2.00 .
I reckon I would have paid more than that for just the one at BMW.

Everything has been cleaned ready for assembly but that can wait until tomorrow now.

Thinking about what @Grenville said, If that Possum Piddle is really Skunk Pee, then it must strong stuff to have rotted the bolt that quickly

I think I am going to cheat a bit.....
Just been looking at the mating faces of the oil filter housing, and there are some scratches on them. ( not from me I hasten to add) I think I will use a smear of the sealant that I used on the valve cover and also the waterpump as that was pitted. I dont really want to put it all back and then find it weeps a bit.
I think there must have been some used before as the gasket was a bugger to get off, and in little bits at a time.

I have been searching on the net, and found info that says the torque for these bolts is 10nm. (About 7ft/lbs)
They were tighter than that when I undid them.

I think that the leak was actually from the o rings on the pressure relief valve. The o rings are flattened and have gone a bit hard.

All done now and back together.....no bits over, yippee !!
Its one of those jobs that you spend a day or so doing and when its finished doesn’t look any different.

I replaced the o rings on the pressure valve that I took out as I ended up with an extra pair, so if anyone needs this part, now its all cleaned and refurbed, PM me and you can have it.

Used the parts cleaner for the first time, and although just a cheap one works ok.

Now just need to fire it up and check that there are no leaks

Had a good look round the oil filter housing and no evidence of any oil.......so far so good !!

Mot advise......’ corrosion on offside rear brake pipe’ so jacked up, removed wheel and had a look.

Yes a bit of surface rust but nothing major, so cleaned, treated, undercoated and painted.

Front end jacked up this morning, and checked the front brake hoses. ( the other MOT advise), and not bad enough to change immediately. It will wait until I do the discs, pads, etc at the end of the year.

So removed the under panels and the crossmember, and cleaned them all plus all round the bottom of the engine. Now, (fingers crossed), all the oil leaks are sorted, the engine should stay clean.

Thats it for now.....all the advises done or at least checked, so the only thing to do now is drive it

I’m not sure how paranoid the advice is. But I’ve often read you shouldn’t clean up a brake pipe, particularly by rubbing with emery cloth as it will weaken it and/or it’s already weakened once corrosion appears.

You may also find you go from one advisory to another as there is one that says product/coating applied to brake pipe.

But then I’ve just spent an inordinate amount of time replacing the entire system on my 3.0. I’m on my second roll of kunifer pipe. And it takes quite a lot of practice bending the pipe and flaring it.

Tight bends one after the other with kunifer are the worst. And it would bring me out in spots if I didn’t try and copy the factory bends

Trouble with kunifer pipe is that it work hardens, so, if you don't get it right the first time it's almost impossible to re bend it again.

I’ve got a pipe straightener and pipe benders to overcome that. But I don’t like the idea of trying twice in case it weakens it. So I just practiced until I was getting it right first time, mostly just using a long socket rather than the pipe benders. But the pipe benders I found were needed for tight and/or back to back bends.

Even so you can’t bend kunifer as tightly as copper and I found it to be quite a different beast.
