Several factors are involved in the driver shortage, including an aging workforce, a drop in the number of young workers qualified to drive heavy-goods vehicles, and working conditions that are less than ideal. Germany alone is expected to lose about 250,000 drivers to retirement in the next 10-15 years. Investing in better trucks may seem like a small solution, but the shortage almost demands it, according to Mathyssek: "[T]he driver has a choice for which company he wants to work."

It was a huge problem 10 years ago then we opened the gates to Poland and other EU countries which eased the problem. A lot of the Polish are now returning back to their homeland again firing up the driver shortage.
There are huge problems with the industry as a whole. As stated an aging work force due to retire and very few young people wanting to obtain their licence because of the cost and lack of earns and working conditions once gained.

Poor money.
Very long hours.
Little or no benefits such as sick pay or pension.
Kit is generally becoming poor as firms are not wanting to invest so often as the profits are nowhere near as big as they used to be.

Drivers on the continent tend to be on day rates rather than hourly and earn less than us, we looked into it when we first started looking at moving to france, but at around £90 per day for anything upto a 15 shift that is never going to happen.

I would hand my licence back in a heartbeat if I could earn reasonable money elsewhere. Drivers are treated with zero respect by most employers and their customers now days. I'm doing between 65 and 70 hours a week now and making a wage, nothing more.

Drivers will still have to sit in the cabs for loading purposes. I won't be getting involved in that, if it does come before I retire in 15 years I will walk away for sure.
