Well it can carry a sentence of 5 years. Make that 50 and there might be a deterrent.

I was thinking a bullet or two. Putting several hundred people in immediate danger doesn’t deserve any time for reflection in jail afterwards.

I thought they were covers with trained hawks to grab these drones anyway?

They’re not going to fly at night though.

They could jamb the signals quite easily I would have thought or even take direct control of the drone. Possibly even force it to return to where it was launched to catch the culprits when they have control of it.

Maybe all drones should be fitted with a remote control kill switch that can’t be overridden by someone re-flashing the software.

Airports could easily be fitted with monitoring equipment that would quickly triangulate the origin of any transmissions in the bands used to control drones. There’s still the chance that someone will change the frequencies that these work on from unlicensed spectrum to something else.

It is getting serious now at Gatwick. I hope the culprits don’t think they can get away with continuing to do this. There will be guys from Hereford on the ground now.

I thought these latest ones were in daylight. Not sure how you could control a drone in the dark? I thought you needed line of sight to be able to fly them.

Tony.

They were being flown at 3am!
Don’t need line of site to fly them, only to see them Tony. Most have led lights on so you can see them which is how I guess they were spotted.
They often have GPS on them too so they can return automatically to origin when when batteries get low - and that can be used as an Achilles heel. Simply spoof the GPS signal - make the drone think it is way outside its zone of origin, confuse it.
Lots of countermeasures that could be used.

Get in someone that does clay pidgeon shooting.....soon have it on the ground!!!

"Police have approached the Ministry of Defence for help and they could send soldiers to test the Army's new weapon - known as a 'Drone Dome' or 'kill-jammer' - which can 'soft kill' a drone by knocking out its communications or a 'hard kill' by shooting it down with a laser from up to two miles away."

Always too late in this country.

Surely with all the recent terrorist threats they should have this sort of protection in place already?

Or will they wait until someone bolts some explosives onto a drone?

I read this morning that US airports and air bases have this type of protection and it amazes me that we don't.

Somewhat late in the day they’ve officially asked for help. I suspect it was already there on the ground mid-morning.
I’m guessing that they really want to catch those responsible though. They’ll be looking down the wrong end of a night-sight equipped barrel if they try again when flights resume tonight.

Is it a genuinely hard thing to catch a drone (when you have the resources of a country like the UK at your disposal?)

Not at all hard to take them out of the sky.
It’s clearly become an escalating situation. It’s no longer the drones but whoever is flying them that’s the problem.

There’s no way this could be organised without some chatter. It’s beginning to look like it’s sponsored by some more organised group. This is a concerted and planned effort to disrupt things. The authorities know something they’re not letting on to which is why nothing has moved at Gatwick, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is extended to other airports tonight.

If it was easy to take that drone out they would have by now.

This is just the standard British thing of being leagues behind the rest of the world with tech yet again.

Many Florida villa owners on the Forums which Shirl is on are reporting that people are cancelling their stays and requesting refunds because they cannot fly. A couple who are regulars at ours usually fly from Gatwick and are due out this weekend, are now trying to find an alternative flight in case they need it.

Tony.

Mmmm we would should organise a cruise out and show em how it’s done, after all a roadster is perfectly designed for this type of combat- fast agile and topless (provided it’s not too cold or wet, can’t have that now)

I’ll even bring the kids Nerf guns =))

(@Lee do you have sunroof on your Italian Stallion?)

It is easy Lee. Simply swamp the input stage of the receiver on the drone with way more power it’s designed for. If they’re commercial drones they will be standard frequencies used.

It’s not the drones that’s the problem now. It’s finding who is behind it. Just reported 50+ drone sightings in the last 24 hours. They’re not going to stop until caught. This isn’t a group of d1cks with a drone from Maplin or Curry’s. It looks very much organised and planned. Guys in Cheltenham will be listening to every mobile call, reading every text and WhatsApp message originated in the Gatwick area. The scale of assets being used now will be enormous.

It certainly is looking as though someone is behind this with real intent to cause mayhem, could even be more meddling from Putin, and don't laugh just yet, stranger things have happened.

Tony.
