We had one in our garden which we were delighted about bout we ended up with a lawn that was infested with fleas that could only have come from the Hedgehog or one or more of the local cats! Very unpleasant to say the least.

Hi Davy, notice you have put a dislike on our post. We are not in any way anti Hedgehogs and are lifetime nature lovers so do not want to discourage anybody, but we just wanted people to be aware that this can happen as it was for us an extremely stressful situation and difficult to sort out.

Yeah I just meant it wasn't nice that your grass was infested with fleas haha, I didn't dislike your reply, just the idea of fleas

Have you got a night camera ? we have found in the past mr.rat visiting with mrs rat but we seem to have got rid of them for the time being, but living surounded by farms there is not much that one can do

Often amazed that folks dont realise that the magic fairies that clear waste food form gardens / streets etc dont wear brown fur coats and have long tails

Our neighbour used to feed birds all the time, I'm talking large handfuls of seed on top of a brick pillar between fence panels, at least 2 or 3 times a day. I mentioned to him that he's probably putting too much out but he said it always goes !! Last summer, warm afternoon, theres a young rat sat happily eating all the food !! Luckily I managed to get a photo to show him. To say he was shocked was mild and has changd his habits since. His wife was visibly shaken by the idea of rats close. He's sorted the piller since too

Recently built a bird table and started putting bird food out once a fortnight but saw a mouse at dusk coming in from next door to eat what the birds have been dropping. Now we don’t put any loose food on the table itself and have purchased two hanging feeders which are said to be rodent proof. Mouse hasn’t been seen since and any stored food has now been taken out of the garden cabin and kept in the house just for peace of mind. Am concerned about other neighbours storing food in out buildings as this is a known sauce that attracts mice and rats. Apparently rats will travel some considerable distance at night to find food and when they do will set up home close by. Food for thought.

I keep the bag of food in a big plastic bucket in the side conservatory, I only put out enough to feed the birds and the tables are empty by teatime and any that gets dropped is cleaned up by the pigeons ( I knew they would be useful at some point). Still get mice in the small shed and garage mainly through the winter

A few years ago I stored the bird food in the garden shed, rats chewed the threshold away and a hole in the floor both of which I repaired and kept it in our lobby at back of garage
So far this year the night camera has only picked up a little mouse once
