Garage flooring - What's best?

Looking for a bit of advice and information.

The floor in our garage has always been problematic. Poor quality concrete. Uneven. Just badly laid. No amount of sealer has sorted it to prevent it constantly throwing up dust. About 20 years ago I used an epoxy sealant and that solved the problem for a few years, but sadly, it's becoming a problem again. Don't really want to tear it up and start again.

Anyone used garage floor matting of any kind?
If so, what kind?
Does it cope with constant car movements?
Interlocking or roll?
Does the floor need to be levelled off and smooth?

At work we covered our workshop floor with a heavy industrial floor paint that is recommended for warehouses. It copes with heavy traffic from forklifts and lorries so will be more than suitable for a domestic garage. From memory we didn't have to get a separate sealer, it was a one coat application. I can't remember the brand but I wouldn't think you'd have much trouble finding a similar product.

I've previously thought about paint, but, I think it would need levelling compound first. The surface has got aggregate poking through so would be a point that causes wear - that's basically what's happened with the epoxy.
 
I have a carpeted garage Ian, it helps keep the car warm over winter and more importantly it allows the wheels to slip a little, removing tensions in the drive train.

That’s very nice and comfortable for you and the car. The problem is it doesn’t work alongside woodworking because of the dust and wood shavings. Got to be something that can be swept easily.

I hoover it Ian with a Henry. Does a brilliant job and really robust.
 
We use old office carpet tiles in the ZedShed, you can then swap out individual tiles as when they get too mucky. Easy to sweep the rubbish in to a pile on one and then take it to the bin to empty.

Got a 2kW cyclone vacuum doing dust extraction but some jobs are still real filthy. Carpet would be a problem not a help. It would take much longer to clean up and you’d never be able to get all the dust out leaving a fire hazard.
 
I have used the foam type interlocking mats around the extremities of the car. That way they don't squash when the car is parked.and it is comfy to kneel on at the sides, front and back of the car. Easy to clean too

If it were just the car I had to worry about, that would be a good solution.
I need something that the car will stand on without causing problems because that area is also the working space. Have seen some tiles that have ribs underneath - they would cope with the undulations in the floor and provide a wall to wall solution. At £6+ per 450mmsq tile its going to cost a small fortune. Probably cheaper to have the floor ripped up and a proper float cement floor put in. Not something I really want to do. Alternatively, I could drop a nice big shed on the back lawn :whistle:
