Fuel pipe replacement

When servicing the smurf on Saturday, I tried to remove the fuel filter which has ruptured a hard pipe (guess it much have already been weak) towards the fuel tank.

New part ordered from BMW (£92 ) but does anyone have experience of changing them? Happy to dive in but tips would be appreciated

Never done these on a Z Martin but have changed quite a few over the years, usually making them up from 10mm copper tube. Not difficult just a messy job like brake pipes mate.

It should do mate. I would spray the chassis clips liberally with freeing oil to soften any corrosion which hopefully will allow the pipes to come out of the clips without breaking them.

@BMBabe picked the pipe up from me. It seems it goes into a rubber hose at the fuel pump end, so should be easy to fit

It was dead easy in the end.

1. Jack passenger side up and support with axle stands

2. Remove fuel pump fuses (13 and 18 on my car) and start car until it not longer goes. This de-pressurises the fuel system

3. Remove heat shield on passenger side covering fuel filter

4. Loosen jubilee clip on fuel pipe.

5. Loosen jubilee clip at fuel tank end

6. Remove screw from 2x pipe brackets

7. Separate fuel pipe from fuel hose at either end

8. Fit new fuel pipe.

9. Tighten jubilee clip at either end.

10. Replace fuel pump fuses.

11. Turn ignition to position 2. This activates the fuel pump. Check for any leaks. Tighten if required

12. Start car and check for leaks again

13. Tun car off

14. Replace brackets

15. Replace heat shield

16. Get the car back on the ground!

At £92 for a 2 foot piece of pipe, yes!

I did both of mine in cupronickel stuff that way I knew they would not rust again then just used my brake tool to flair the ends and some stainless hose clamps and some new rubber pipe as the old stuff was passed its best, I found where the old pipe went there is a flush welded bracket thing on the car that the pipe had slightly rubbed against at some point and removed the paint causing the rust, anyway was very easy to make just remove the old pipes as a pattern and just bend it the same (leave a little extra length to clear that bracket thing)

Yes it was a shock. But I suppose it's better to find out while it's up in the air than being out on a run
