Glad to see you have got your switch and Relay . I am surprised that the relay is green as it is shown in the Bently's Manual as being an orange relay and mine is an orange relay.

So I obtained these things now fingers crossed that this is enough for the fog lights to work :D

I've fitted the switch and ordered the relay from BMW get it tomorrow so like you will see what happens. Good luck wished for you.

I would double check this relay with BMW suppliers as this is a 5 pin relay that they are supplying you with and relay 47 is only a 4 pin relay.
The drawing which you are showing is a BMW 3 series which is a different layout on the electrics.

It would appear that your wiring is diferent for the European Union , so you may well have the right relay after all. On the british cars it is only a four pin relay.
Let me know how you get on. Good luck.

I think I may have to bite the bullet on this one as I can't tell from diagram what is where and looking at the diagram the rear fog lights and front fog lights go through same relay and if that's so then the relay is ok because the rear fogs work fine.Quote)

A relay is simply a switch. When you operate the dashboard switch it powers the relay which sends power to whatever it is connected to. If both went through the same relay they would come on together. It is done this way because thinner wire can be used to connect the switches to the relay board saving weight and bulk. That's my laymans understanding of it anyway.

As I said earlier the front and back fog lights are on two totally separate circuits. The front foglight work from relay K47 and fuse 15 10amp.
The rear fog lights are powered by relay K49 and fuse 17 7.5amps the position of the relays should be marked on the underneath of the main
distribution box.

So I did a little search in electric schemes and I found this. I paint 4 dots on the scheme....I think that it means that the right K47 relay will have to have four outputs

EDIT: strange is when I look into 3 series PDF there are also just four outputs

There you can compare outputs from the green relay that I bought (left) and from the scheme for Z3 (right)

EDIT: maybe its the headlight relay K48

On the five pin relay which you have both 87 and 87b are both outgoing switch lines when the relay is energised. I would need to see a good Photo
of your distribution box and see if it compares to mine, hope this may be of some help.

I was not trying to undermine your explanation Tellboy, but I just wanted to explain what a relay is. Sometimes we assume that every body is fully clued up which is not the case. No offence taken I hope.

Hi I actually purchased today a relay from BMW at Salisbury and it had 5 terminals on it I plugged it in and the lights work. I bought it from main dealer to make sure it was the correct one which is a K47 as tellyboy said it was. Hope we don't all fall out over this posting on fog lights I'm just happy for all help and advice given on things posted on the Zroadsteers forum.
Thanks to all.

No offence taken, the trouble with these systems is they are not all uniform . Over the years they have changed things around and it seems that you may have a Z3
but it is not the same as the next persons Z3, which would probably explain why a Haynes car manual is approimately half an inch thick and a Bentley Z3 service manual
is nearly two inches thick and well over a thousand pages. I greatly admire German Engineering although I think they often overcomplicate things
