When I did the cooling sysem on mine 2 years ago I replaced the water pump. thermostat, tensioner and belts. The pulleys and fan were just thoroughly inspected.
I would be reluctant to do the fan delete as if the car is used as intended you can encounter some pretty hot conditions. 4 years ago, I was stuck in a traffic queue in Switzerland for 2 hours in 35 degree heat the temperature behaved perfectly. I wouldn't like to do that with no fan.
Yes Mike I would certainly agree with your comment for those conditions. If I were to be planning a trip which involved high air temperatures and altitude I would put a new viscous fan on. For my UK use I was happy to delete it on my otherwise standard M52B28TU engine.

For what it's worth, my M44 does not have a viscous or fixed fan from factory, just the air con fan (puller) which also acts as the cooling fan.
No problems what so ever with this and I can turn on the air con which starts the fan to pre - empt any risk of overheating in heavy queuing traffic. Maybe the larger engine needs more fan cooling though, don't know?

Took the viscous fan off mine back in winter, and haven't got round to re-fitting it yet. No over-heating problems at all so far, and that includes all this hot stuff we've had recently. Luckily I live in the land of no traffic jams, just the occasional :baa standing about.
