I did my water pump, radiator, thermostat and pulleys. My tensioners are OK at 108k miles. Might be a good idea to do the vanos seals while access is good. I did mine.
Being a single Vanos I believe I would need the locking tool

If we doing the the ‘whilst you in there thing’ surley fitting the inter cooler is a good idea, makes adding a snail later on a doddle then :)

I've got one you can borrow Sean. Just pm me your address and I'll send it when your ready, or I can meet with @Jjim the next time he's down in Plymouth and he can ferry it. He told me when we were on the Euro trip that he might need to borrow it too at some stage. It's on the shelf in my garage at the minute doing nothing

Deffo thermostat as well as water pump. I’ve never bothered with tensioner and pulleys before.

I use a Meyle water pump and a Behr/Mahle thermostat. Usually the cheapest for my 2.2s is seller bmwmotormec on eBay. He just happens to be in Swindon too but I always get it posted anyway!

The fan it fine pal, yours smashed didn't it
Yes mate while on the Derbyshire cruise. I'd change it for a metal one while it's stripped to stop any future problems.

Snail
It’s the cool way to say turbo, I only just learnt it after getting a turbo car ;)
It does look like a snail after all but hasn’t the opposite effect!

Have you thought about doing the viscous fan delete? If you have aircon just need to change the thermostat in the side of the radiator. Not a mod for everybody as you are reliant on the electric fan, but it removes the risk of the fan breaking up.
Look for a water pump with a metal impeller also, most are plastic.

@Sean d likes to drive his Zed hard for maximum enjoyment ;);) I wouldn't recommend this for anyone that does. I did this on the M and had no issues, not even in standing traffic on very hot days until I drove it very hard then the cool down was not sufficient. Just my observations

Now that could be a consideration but Niall has put me off a bit, I do have an excellent fan that fan that came for an accident damaged van but was never used

When I did the cooling sysem on mine 2 years ago I replaced the water pump. thermostat, tensioner and belts. The pulleys and fan were just thoroughly inspected.
I would be reluctant to do the fan delete as if the car is used as intended you can encounter some pretty hot conditions. 4 years ago, I was stuck in a traffic queue in Switzerland for 2 hours in 35 degree heat the temperature behaved perfectly. I wouldn't like to do that with no fan.

I removed the viscous today and it seems pretty good, however there is a whole lot of play in the water pump, I mean a huge amount, the pulley literally rocks when moved

It looks as though you have caught it just in time, once it does that it will soon shred the belt.
