Freebie Nitrogen tyre gas experience

Depends how deep they vacuum it. Otherwise as you guys have said it will always be a cocktail of gasses. On the old hydrolastic suspension system you had to vacuum the system before re filling so as to get a "solid " ride, if you didn't you got a very sponges ride like bad or missing shockers.
 
Mint, I just found out some detail, they actually create the nitrogen on site, and is in fact just a compressor with a drying unit, so you get dry air which is 90% nitrogen and 10% oxygen. The funny thing is ATS state that you can fill with air afterwards, but once the ratio drops below 95% nitrogen you will lose the effects! so basically you never have the benefit in the first place. On testing over a twelve month period air filled tyres lost 3psi and nitrogen filled 90% lost 2.5psi. Incidentally the aerospace and f1 teams use liquid nitrogen, which is 99% pure.

For Nitrogen to be liquid, would it not be extremely cold? and if put into the tyre in that state, would the tyres not be liable to crack, by virtue of the freezing Nitrogen changing the genetics of the tyre, making the compound brittle? Mmmmm!!!:cool:

Quite agree Mike. No way you could use liquid nitrogen, we use it in the oil & gas industry and it is stored in special tanks that have to be able to vent.

When we had trouble setting the bead on a honda 4 wheeler in my friends shop the young fellow working there took a band and put it around the tire and then used a nitrogen tank with an air valve and hose attached and started injecting the nitrogen. In no time the first side popped on and then he removed the band and flipped the wheel and filled until the second bead popped. Had never seen that done before but it worked on all four wheels. Can't say it's money well spent if based upon your figures but I'm sure others may argue.

Try using lighter fluid next time, Jim and then igniting it!!!!! Make sure you are ready for the explosion. They use this method a lot on 4 x 4s, when they are running low tyre pressures and the tyre is squeezed off the rim.:nailbiting:

Nothing to do with drinking guys, the nitrogen is stored in bulk in liquid form, as it is released through the system it becomes gaseous once more, it needs to be kept under pressure to keep it a liquid, it is about -176 degrees if you want to know, we used liquid nitrogen in the heat treatment business, it was stored in a bulk tank and then piped to the Furnaces at low pressure where it was mixed with ammonia to form the atmosphere. When we were deep casing components, sometimes they retained the high temperature structure due to carbon saturation, in order to fully transform the structure, you have to quench below ambient temps, to do this we purged the ntrogen from the tank at high pressure into an open tank, which gave you a bath of liquid nitrogen, we then submerged the components in this until liquid heated up and turned to gas, at which point the components had been down to -176 and fully quenched.

Mike, I did not mean they pump liquid nitrogen into the tyres, I meant they use liquid nitrogen, which is stored under pressure and that this is 99% pure! obviously on release it turns to a gas. I suppose I am expecting my audience to be logical!

We are!! Zedonist. My post was only a question, hence the question marks!!! However, liquid nitrogen at -176 degrees would destroy the tyres, so I presumed that there must be a way that it was turned into a gaseous state before it entered the tyre.:)

Never been a smoker, do they still sell lighter fluid?? lol yes I've heard of that having a brother that owned a tire shop. The nitrogen was the new young gun trying something different he'd heard about. Lots of very interesting facts coming out of this thread.

Sorry bud, that's what happens when you have read to many of bonzo's posts.
 
Years ago as an apprentice agricultural engineer, if/when we couldn't get a tubeless tyre to blow out to the rim we used to tie a rope around the outside of the tyre and then put a metal bar through the rope and twist it to put pressure on the tyre. Then coupled with the air being blown the tyre would "seal" and pop onto the rim. Crude but effective.;)
