How about water companies creating capture and storage facilities up stream, before it hits the flood plains. This could then be used in times when needed, so we dont run short. Insane idea I know.

The Tide is out!
Meanwhile back at the Lock the Trent has peaked same level as 1977.
Behind the north bank it has seeped through and the Canal is down.
And they now have 12 temporary pumps chucking water from the Canal into the River.
Torksey Caravans Park is a mess around 25 Statics flooded.
And an historical picture of flooding in the past.
Sky and BBC news teams were there yesterday and their helicopters have been overhead this afternoon. Dunham Bridge made the Sky lunchtime news and aerial shots showed down stream to Torksey. Hightide this afternoon around 5.30, 2m tide at Hull. Next week I'm told they will be 4m.

What they don't tell you is the measuring gauges were only installed in 2000. We have pictures from 1977 which tell a different tale.

Before that they need to stop Councils granting planning permission for building on flood plains or it will never stop.

I went down and had a look at the sluices yesterday where the Welland and drainage channels release into the tidal river.
All three huge sluices were wide open (never seen that before). The main channel had dropped by around 5 feet from it's highest point as I could see the line of crap at the edges. Just hope the fish stocks survive as that is my Summer fishing spot! Lots of lovely big Tench in the channel and they don't like flowing water very much!

Agree. If they must, perhaps build on stilts as it is bound to flood from time to time.
And, the sensational media should stop spending thousand of pounds on taking aerial pictures of flooded flood plains to wind up the tree huggers.

Our canal never floods. It's about 100 feet above the valley floor.
This bit is called 5 locks because, well, there's 5 locks one after the other going south down towards Cwmbran

Looking South. It's like a flight of steps going down.
These locks were decommissioned many years ago. Would cost a fortune to have kept them. In total the mile and a half walk from five locks down to the town centre has, at my last count, 14 or so locks. God knows how many there are in total to get right to down the the docks in Newport.
North of five locks the canal is navigable with a further 6 work locks going north.
There was something said a couple of weeks ago about making some of the other bits round here navigable but I think that's a pipe dream. So so many locks in such a small distance

Media ceratinly dont pay thousands for the pictures these days £59 - £100 max
The Sky helo costs a damn sight more than that.
The Thames is not good either, My parent live in Laleham and their house is surrounded, my boat look like it is in the middle of the river rather than at the end of the garden. Praying it stays dry for a while

Amazing footage, so sorry for those people with flooded homes, it makes such a mess. That house on its own in the middle of it all looks so isolated.
That narrow boat on Torksey Arm (where the Trent meets the Fosse Dyke) has been stuck there since early November. The floating dock it is moored to it about at the top limit.

I just googled Torksey and you are 7m above sea level.
We are 30m above sea level. Some around here is still flooded, but the water is going down fast. We will be at high, but normal water level in a day (maybe two).
You still have a lot of water to flow down the Trent before you can start to dry out, but it won't get worse, unless it rains again in the Peak District, or they have to open the Ladybower sluice gates.
I'll be spending the afternoon starting to dry my van. Does anybody want a Y2000 Escort van? ...

Yeah, cheers for that. You might be surprised to know that many of the "Johnny come lately" people who live around here don't even understand how rivers flow or which direction. Or that there are 2 totally different water systems at work here, River and land drainage.
