Not too sure what happens in all the US states regarding road worthyness. @FRANKIE

Tony.
I don't know where to start with this. Each State has its own set of rules with regard to car inspection. Some states didn't have any inspection at all. These were mostly rural states. I don't know if that is still the case. Driving in another state that is different that the one where the car is registered used to mean that you were never stopped for any infractions with regard to inspection since one state couldn't impose its rules on a car from a state that had different rules. I remember driving my car from Pennsylvania with a out dated inspection sticker in New Jersey and not having to worry about getting stopped. I think that things might have changed since then. There are Federal Rules reganring exhaust emissions that might be mandatory for all states now. I'd have to do some research on that.
I mentioned on the forum at another earlier time that the last time I got my '96 Z3 inspected by the State that I was told that it would be the last inspection sticker needed as the law changed so that cars that were more that 20 years old no longer had to be inspected. The inspection sticker on the car now says July 2017. I haven't driven it very much lately so I'm not sure if I'm going to be stopped by the police since the car doesn't look 20 years old but has an out ot date sticker. I want to keep the sticker on it for nostalgic purposes but it might end up being a pain in the ass getting stopped all the time. I'll keep you up to date on that. In the mean time, its a scarey thing to be on the road with 20 year old cars with no inspections at all. It might end up costing lives as there are a lot of people nursing older cars that can't afford newer ones and will not maintain their car to proper standards if only because they can't afford to do it.......................Frankie

I think Frankie is right. With the best will in the world even enthusiasts will be tempted to put off essential maintenance if no-one is going to inspect the car. My MGB needs a new steering UJ. It's not desperate and will have to be done before the next test due in April. If it wasn't going for a test would I be tempted to put off the replacement? Of course I would. I was just a kid when the first test came in - the ten-year test it was called, because only cars over ten years old were inspected. There were some truly dangerous vehicles being used then with holes in the floors, bald tyres, knackered steering joints, ineffective brakes, you name it. Do we really want to go back to that?
