The cages are made for the unit, hence one came with your lads. because the unit has a lock clip matching the cage.
Without that the unit would simply slide out he cage. you can probably by cages separate, but to work, it would need to have a clip that matched the one on the unit. All these unit don't seem to have anything for clipping to a cage (that I can see). It's like they are screwed to the side somehow, but I just can't see how that would would in a Z3, or pretty much most cars... hence why case/frames are used.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious. But I can't see it.

Ah I see. I imagined the cages, single or double DIN had a universal catch system if they were aftermarket.

I'm settling on something like this...

However, although all 1-din fitting, they don't seem to come with a cage/frame. Just some brackets.

The sides look like this;

I just can see how that would fit without a normal cage/frame

I've even seen in the reviews a pic of one installed in a Z3?!!

(it was just a pic in the review, so I can't even ask the owner!)

Anyone got a clue? I'm just very apprehensive to order and then find I can't get it to fit?
That one is pretty much the same as I have, there are a lot of variants all very similar,

This is the back of mine:

it has the same stepped design, and I had no issues with fitment, I will check tomorrow regarding the cage, but I am sure it has one.

Notice my home screen is different, it's just because I downloaded an app called Car Launcher, much like Android phones, you can choose from a number of apps that give different looks to the interface

@gookah, any info you have on yours would be appreciated.

When there is a cage it's a doodle, without, it's a different story as there are no sides inside in din slot on the z3 and not way to take the side part off alone.

I did find this cage one on amazon,
but it's a good bit more than than same spec ones on ali, with the 'dubious' fitment..

I wonder is these two distances are the same??? Then a ISO cage might work?

so I checked today and it is in a cage:

this is covered by the trim that comes with it:

the screen and holder is slotted to allow different heights:

It has two clasps that you slide outwards to adjust the height, and a ball fixing that allows it to be swivelled.

Now I am not sure if it came with a cage, or I just used the one from my old Pioneer unit, but either way it is doable and it locks in place.
I tried to remove it with the two Pioneer keys I have, but it wouldn't come out,
So I had to stop there and take the missus out instead...... !

Thank you for doing that @gookah, it's very helpful. I am starting to think a cage might work and that the tooth might slip into the gap where the split level part is.

After a bit of trawling I found this pic;

Which kind of shows the tooth would grip about 80mm from face.

Now struggling to find there dimension of where the tooth is on a standard ISO cage!!! :)

But getting closer. Looks like it's ballpark right though, with the right cage.

What do you need a screen for anyway? You are supposed to be watching the road, not taking your eyes off the road to play with toys . . . The thing is supposed to be playing music etc - not that you really need such distractions.

Sat Nav.
Looking at a speedometer or tachometer, or buttons on the radio , all involve taking your eyes off the road.
its down to taking advantage of technology, continuous improvement and progress.

All new cars come with a screen nowadays, especially electric cars.

I'd love to do a screen, but I leave my car parked with the top down fairly often and I'm concerned it would be a thief magnet.

I've been looking at one from Kenwood that has a pop-out phone holder, so your phone becomes the screen. If the updated it will wireless android auto I'd send it.
