Fitting a M54 Inlet Manifold

Last time I suggested this as beneficial it met with negative response along the lines of how do you polish plastic?

Tony.
can't believe you even said that.. they are plastic, what a silly idea, a man of your experience too, tut tut ;)

Is that negative enough for this thread too?

Assuming that you have purchased the M54B25 manifold, you will need the associated DISA part number 11617544806. The one on your 2.0 L manifold will not be big enough. Be aware that there is also a even larger DISA that is used in the M54B30 manifold. The 3.0 L DISA will not fit the M54B25 manifold.

Both my manifolds came with DISA valves.

The M54B25 Manifold goes onto my car today, so will be able to update with 2.0L Z3 specific results in the next couple of days.
Excellent info again Murray, thank you,

Did you just get the blank manifold, I have seen one or 2 for £30-40,
Yes Sean, I looked at quite a few on eBay all listed as 2.5 but you could see from the pics they had the oval ports. Finally found one with the right part number and the D shaped ports for £30. Just ordered the adaptor plate and thanks to Murray I can now look for a DISA.

Look forward to seeing your results,

Just finishing breakfast, Cars is finished and its a fine day so will be doing the test drive this morning.

And the numbers are in for the M52TUB20 Z3:
- 2% increase in torque at the top end
- 4% increase in power at the top end
- 12% increase in acceleration.

The increase in acceleration is about a 1/3 of that gained with the M52TUB25. My guess is that the 2.0 L is not so constrained with airflow due to its original manifold being used on all M52TUB engines from 2.0 to 2.8 L.

Really interesting folks! I happen to have a manifold on my shelf, been sitting there since January. I may follow suit Murray and fit it to the Mora over the next few weeks! The gains you mention sound substantial enough to make it worth the effort!

A 1% gain in Formula 1 is worth about £25M, so a 2-4% gain for free is a no-brainer!!!

Throttle body adaptor arrived today, nicely made peace of kit. Got to wait till after the 8th for the manifold as the venders on holiday till then.
Looking at the pictures on the web of the thottle body adaptor fitted it looks like there's some edges that may need smoothing out? Bit of old fashioned porting required! haven't done that for ages:)

Hi Murray, how does the 2.0l feel, is the extra performance noticeable

Hi Sean
Around town, don't notice any real difference
On the open road, its easier to pass a slow car
So its quicker on acceleration ?, in your opinion is it worth doing, I am debating wether to spend money on the 2.0l or swao it for a 2.8

Yes its quicker on acceleration. The change is not massive. If you are looking for more power and are considering a 2.8 L Z3, then go with the 2.8. You'll never get 2.8 L performance out of a 2.0 L Z3 unless you do forced induction or swap in a 2.8 L (M52TUB28) engine.

just trying to get my head around the acceleration tests.

all tests, time from 1500rpm to redline?

what were the before and after times?

Time from 1,500 rpm to red line.

I don't suppose the datalogger produced speed against time curves?

Just curious to see where the time gain occurred. The only thing i can think is the standard engine must have been bogging down at the start of the run.
