Was at Lytham Hall yesterday for the Classic Car Show.

Spotted this Z3 with the fabled Boot Rack and Suitcase. 😍

If anyone has this setup that they want to sell, please get in touch. 👍

I would hate to lose the rear vision to one of these things - some people should learn how to travel light! There is a lot of internal volume in a Z3 if you look for it. We used to go camping for six weeks around Europe, and had plenty of room for a table and chairs etc.

I would imagine that the Laptop got replaced with a smartphone giving you some extra space for something else.

Hi Wez

‘Guilty as charged’, the above BMW Z3 in question at the Lytham Hall Show is mine and I am very proud of her and all her accessories. I just wanted to say thank you so much for taking the time to take the photo and post it on this forum. I am sure you will agree that the Lytham Show was amazing, we had great weather, the cars were spectacular and it is always wonderful so see all the marques on display, especially BMW roadsters.

I have to say that I love my BMW Z3, without question. It is an amazing car to own, after over twenty years everything still works; the cassette player; the CD changer in the boot; the electric windows and seats and she still drives as tight as she was first manufactured. I never need an excuse to take her out for a spin on our country roads.

Regarding the BMW case, just for clarification, if anyone out there is looking to acquire the original case and rack I would like to give some background and valid comment regarding ownership and usage. Initially it took me a couple of years to actually find the BMW Z3 hardshell case and rack and then three more years to find the ‘inner case’ that complements the set. This system has been extremely well thought out and well made, with its two-handle locking system, its fixings to the rack are almost invisible and everything is completely detachable in seconds should you need to. In my view, there is not an aftermarket product out there that rivals it and as far as rarity and collectability are concerned it goes without question that it will only add value to an already appreciating classic roadster.

On the subject of visibility, the view out of the rear window is obviously impaired, but, as I am sure hundreds of heavy goods vehicle and van drivers out there can testify, by adopting a careful driving technique and using your wing mirrors you can arrive at your destination safely and without a problem.

My verdict... any BMW addition to your collection can only be a good thing.

Many thanks again Wez, your kind appreciation is very welcome.

I've never seen that before. Pretty cool. That said, I'd never install as it kinda ruins the lines. The Z3 is a sexy looking beast (especially with the top down). I'd struggle to do anything that messes with that. I also have the luxury of using mine solely as a fun car, so we don't ever need to haul luggage.

unless you get a spare boot lid and swap it over when you do/don't want the rack on, a solution for every problem

I have attached a photo with the rack taken off and the four plastic stoppers in place, there is also a chrome set, it only takes two mins to take it off and revert back to your original roadster look. Never leaked or let water in. :)

Function over form I suppose, but I didn't buy Z3s for function. Boot has always been large enough for me, from weekly shopping to holidays abroad with the car. :)

I seem to have added to this thread, as the owner of the Z3M with the case. When you don't need the rack you can use the chrome inserts to fill, which I also have.

Would you sell the case / rack separate to the car? 🤔

I would consider. At the moment I think it adds value to the sale of my Z3M and valuing it is difficult. I know that it was rare when I bought it 8 years ago. I will always listen to offers.
