I never had any intention of buying one. I do remember the one in that James Bond movie but other than the Z3M (which I rather like) I've never thought about one.
My ex-missus in 1998 was going to replace a Mazda 323F we owned with a brand new one. She'd always wanted a two seat sports car so I persuaded her into getting a 1.6 MX5. That started my liking of two seat convertibles. She kept that car until 2010 (now has a MK3) but passed it onto our daughter. We split up in 2009 so other than doing minor repairs for her and taking it for MOT's I was without.
2011 I bought a 1998 (same age as her old MX5) Alfa Spider TS. I had it (though passed it to my now Fiancee) until last year.
Despite the long in the tooth stories of unreliability it wasn't, well not until I had a full belt/variator service at a none independent.
So after several issues two years passed we let it go as it had developed another fault (some dickhead owner
did not check the oil regularly enough) I sold it.
Having bought my new Mercedes I decided I could go a city car to keep the mileage down on my PCP Mercedes. Started looking at Smart cars which very quickly lead to Smart Roadsters. It was apparent that the small motorbike (almost) engine in the cars usually needed major work at 60k (better in the Roadster because it has an oil cooler) so I went off the idea as most in my limited budget were at 60k.
MX5 it was and then by accident in a search a 6-pot 2.0 came up. I went to see it, fell in love with the engine but the car was a pile of rust and would need too much work.
I looked for a while on eBay and Autotrader and found a low mileage (70k) 1998 (built it 1997) 1.9 140bhp car I own. Saw it, bought it.
Granted the engine is no where near that 6-pot but it goes well (sounds very average unfortunately) and is almost as cheap on fuel as my Mercedes CLA. Currently the Z3 is my summer daily.
I would like a 6-pot but my missus likes SLK's, SL's and 939 Alfa Spiders (Brera). I'll have this until at the very least 2021.
