They just cancel the direct debit and take a chance on being stopped by the police. If you've seen the TV programmes of police chasing cars they are usually uninspired when stopped.

Well I thought the whole idea of getting all these systems to "talk" to one-another was to bring things like this to someones attention. Why can the insurance system not "send an alert" to the police or other body as soon as anything like that happens and this results in a knock on the door and a confiscation and crushing. It's not the value of the car you're insuring James a "truck" is likely to be on the road far more, hence the increase in the risk and the potential for payout. With the escalation of costs of solicitors and compensation, the outlay to replace the vehicles involved is quite small in comparison. Well that's how I've been led to understand the "logic" of it all...

You just have to be super careful you don't bump any of the fancy cars running round as it comes out of your pocket. a 1 year old mini cooper s is about £42,000 so a range rover vogue comes in at around £200,000! I saw a brand new Maserati a couple of days ago so made sure i stayed well clear of that!

ANPR is an on-the-spot thing. Although they are recorded, the interogation of the database is VERY labour-intensive and only really worth it for VERY serious offences.
Re insurance companies informing when insurance is cancelled. Most people say they have sold the car, and haven't got the new one yet. Can you imagine how many people do this every day?
ANPR checks VRN against VED and Insurance. It doesn't check that the insurance is appropriate (for instance there are many vehicles with insurance that are actually uninsured). If you are lucky the type of car and its colour can be checked by Mark One Eyeball, but only if there is a reason to be suspicious.
Big brother is watching but he is not very observant

I genuinely forgot one year as I hadn't been sent a notification and we have a number of other cars so I didn't twig.
By the time I did I hadn't yet been sent the fine but I obviously needed to tax the car as soon as I noticed. It wouldn't let me do it on line so I had to phone up all red faced and apologetic. :ymblushing: and I got a fine which I think was £80. I was more upset about the fact that I had never even had a speeding ticket before and had now blemished my copybook.
Still better to pay up than have your precious zed crushed.

I forgot to say that when I phoned up to tax the car they wanted me to pay the fine first so I did on my credit card. When the tax disc came through they back-dated it to the time that I should have renewed it. So there is absolutely no gain to be made by paying later.......... best to remember when it is due :ymblushing: Must install that mantra in my head
